What's a cheap and safe area to live to be within commuting distance to downtown?

None, have you taken a look at your cities debt crisis?

I’ve heard good things about the south side of Chicago

Evanston, Logan Square, Northern suburbs. Aren’t too cheap but tbh as a native from the city I can tell you that you’ll want to prioritize safety over rent costs. Anywhere along the northern metra lines is pretty good too.

What about oak park or Austin?

Try North Center or Lakeview

Safe western Burbs: Berwyn, Oak Park, River Forest, Forest Park, LA Grange, WestChester. If you decide on a specific burb, feel free to message me and I can tell you if it's safe or not.

Avondale is close to the blue line. Oak park close to green

TI asianandy OP May 29, 2019

Are those safe? I heard Austin was bad

There are sketchy parts of oak park for sure but Harlem and oak park stop are pretty nice. I wouldn't live in Austin personally.

Look around the blue line from Addison, and beyond towards O’Hare. Rents will be better than more lake-adjacent areas, and you’re pretty safe in that vicinity.

Actually Pilsen is affordable and an easy commute. Also there are areas West of the West Loop that are gentrified and still affordable. Super easy commute. Pockets of Bronzeville are also ok.

I grew up in Bridgeport right next to Chinatown. It’s one of the safer south side neighborhoods. Moved back recently and paying $950 for 2 bedroom.
