Co-worker who blew you away with their technical skills?

I work at a startup and we hired a new grad a few months ago. This kid may lack experience but as far as his coding, design and architecture skills are concerned, he is better if not at par with staff and senior level engineers. It's almost awkward at times when he correctly identifies flaws in design of even architects who came from companies like Netflix and Facebook. I once asked him if he has tried to get into established companies like Google and he said he has no interest in joining those as he has already saved enough from his mobile apps to retire if he wants to. Any similar stories? Edit: one thing I forgot to mention is that he is only 26 but he started coding when he was 12 as his parents were also engineers and supported his passion from an early age. Not only is he really bright but also very down to earth and respectful without any hint of arrogance.

What apps out of interest?

eBay dtbnvz OP May 25, 2019

He has over a dozen and refuses to put ads in any of them. Majority of revenue is from donations and in apps purchases. They are around productivity, Fitness and calendaring.

The category of apps this person has built shows he values self-discipline. That must be a good reason for his growth. Not spending hours on blind.

how do I become like him?

eBay dtbnvz OP May 25, 2019

His parents encouraged him to read as a child. He was inspired from the books he read especially biographies of people like Richard feynman, Benjamin Franklin and George Carlin.

you just lit up my American dream again after being a mediocre developer for 3 years. Thank you 😊

And it seems like he's not cocky or a dick about it too. That's truly amazing, lucky you to work with him. Try to learn from him!

eBay dtbnvz OP May 25, 2019

Not cocky at all. Infact, he is quick to own up to his mistakes and has gone out of his way several times to help others.

If your coworkers didn’t... you might want to plan to switch jobs soon. I’ve been lucky in my career almost all jobs I took had at least one person that fit the description. Some had great soft skills. The one time it didn’t happen... team was utter shit. Felt like I was lied to during the interview.
