Companies that pay higher than Uber for SWE L5 equivalent

I joined Uber 9 months ago. To be fair, Uber pays SWEs very well. However, I'm not a big fan of my team and project, and the culture in general. I started looking elsewhere. To begin with, I talked to traditionally high paying companies. It was strange that Google recruiter discussed comp (for L5 level) with me even before scheduling a phone screen. They said they wanted to set a realistic expectation for comp. I thought it was just Google or it was just that recruiter. Then literally same thing happened with LinkedIn for a Staff level position. I asked her why they discussed comp so early. She said they had a lot of candidates turned down their offers in favor of Uber's. They just wanted to save time for both me and them. They simply cannot match Uber for comp. I told her that comp isn't the most important, but then she just gave me the absolute maximum comp for the level, which is indeed a lot lower than my current comp. So which companies can match Uber comp for L5/E5 level? TC $475k (excluding signon bonus, equity based on fair market value), 8 yoe

Really? Their stock is going to zero

Google fblowball Feb 7, 2019

Well at least it's not paper money.

Axon hdtswvaw Feb 7, 2019

LOL. On one side that explains why HR wanted to be honest with you on the TC, on the other side, this maybe why Uber has bad culture. Curious to know the maximum for L5 at fb and google. pls DM me.

I guess so. Uber has to pay a premium to get people in and the bar keeps going lower. That's one reason I don't like the team

Uber yTzY24 Feb 7, 2019

That’s quite a strange thing for you to say, given that you yourself joined recently and were evidently paid well above market rates.

Square d4jex6 Feb 7, 2019

What's the valuation you use for a 475 TC?

Uber ioklokl Feb 7, 2019

Some calculation is wrong with your current TC? Maybe joining bonus included? Curious to know.

Updated the post to clarify

In my case, fb just beat out uber. Uber recruiter got stunned. BTW it's my third time saying no to Uber.

Uber jvuv4 OP Feb 7, 2019

That's not what your Blind username says. And why are you at G. Did G beat out F?

Google fblowball Feb 7, 2019

Ahh. No. I didn't change it to fb. Yeah fb lowballed. Then Uber came along and fb became serious.

What’s your base though? TC at uber is fake until they IPO

Uber jvuv4 OP Feb 7, 2019

I wouldn't call it fake. The business is actual growing strong. To be fair, I'd credit this more to our ops than to our engineering org tho

Synack oubsut54gf Feb 7, 2019

Sure, but there’s not a payout until a liquidity event, so that’s what I mean by fake

How are you calculating TC? When talking with the recruiter about my Uber offer they were taking future refreshers into account which increased it from 400k to 450k. Whereas Google didn't include it in their calculation.

Uber jvuv4 OP Feb 7, 2019

I did include bonus and refresh target in my calculation of Uber TC. LinkedIn said they only gave refresher to top of top performers, so expect zero refresh. I forgot to ask about refresh at Google. What's the target for L5?

Google chenku Feb 7, 2019

Around 120k I think, not sure since I'm new

Uber yTzY24 Feb 7, 2019

Your TC for your first year will be much less than that if you leave now, since you’d forfeit your first year’s equity.

Twitter topk Feb 7, 2019

I think op is not leaving within a year

Twitter topk Feb 7, 2019

What is the break down? 475k sounds pretty awesome

Netflix vUhw26 Feb 7, 2019

Netflix will beat that but you must understand you’re getting pre iPo stock that’ll 2x. Are you a Senior II at Uber?

Uber jvuv4 OP Feb 7, 2019

Yes

Doesn’t uber claim that 5b is equivalent to L6 at G/FB?
