I work in Seattle as a Manager of Program management on a work visa H1B. Moved to a new team within the same org a couple months ago. However, last week I received an offer from a company in the Bay Area with a 60% pay hike and a promotion. I would like to stay put though. How do I negotiate with current company without the fear of being asked to leave and losing my H1B.
I would ask for a raise and point out the value of my contributions and market rates. I wouldn't mention the offer unless I was ready to be let go. Once a company knows you've been interviewing elsewhere, your loyalty is questioned and your days are numbered.
How come you lose your H1B? They can simply transfer it.
OP doesn’t want to join other company.
Keep in mind that Bay Area compensation cannot be directly contrasted with Seattle. Different taxes, different markets. 60% doesn’t sound very different from a job change bump of 20-30% after taking into account Seattle to Bay Area salary multiplier of 1.35 ( numbers are personal opinion rather than accepted truths)
Don’t risk yourself negotiating. Move out
You can say you got a competing offer to gauge your market value but you’re not interested and you’d like to discuss a raise. Do not under any circumstances turn it into a blackmail: “give me a raise or I’ll leave”. That’ll get your fucked. Stay 100% positive and collaborative and hope the HR rep or VP isn’t an asshole. (Or you know they value your work and want to keep you already !)
You can’t. Not without putting risk on the table. You have to be prepared to leave if you’re going to try to negotiate with a counter. Just express to them market rate, your contributions, and your counter. Although I’ve known people to receive less money on H1B because honestly that has a value in itself.
Thanks for the reply. I have been thinking about this for a while but can’t come up with any reasonable way to negotiate with current firm without putting h1b at risk. And yes, h1b’s are paid lesser from my experience.
The best thing you can do is outline your contributions and accomplishments rather than market data. Is this new company not willing to sponsor you? Forgive me as I have less knowledge on this actual process. Is it that the moving of jobs restarts it?
