How much salary should one be aiming for to live decently well in and around Sydney Australia? How expensive is it to buy an independent house in Sydney? How is health care in AUS as compared to US? How about child education? Costly? Is it easy to get PR and citizenship? How long is the wait? Is it easy for parents to come live for long term in AUS? Profile: Indian couple working in tech. No kids. Combined annual ~300K. Tired of the GC wait / immigration hurdles / Broken health care.
Sydney housing is on par or more expensive than SF. Cost of living is astronomical due to everything being imported.
Sydney pays half of bay area, but similar expense. They are also tightening immigration. But great cityview, great life, great medicare
And there are little IT jobs in Australia, which makes the market inefficient
Housing was affordable before 2008. Then it inflated just like Bay Area and Vancouver/Toronto with Asian investors flooding the cash market. Taxation is strictly based on ownership/investment/residency status. Life is lot less stressful. Cost of living high. Healthcare is ok - private and fallback government funded. Jobs are (were?) higher paying if anything related to mining. Difference is about 30%. Immigration much easier if you apply before 35 or 40. Having a job makes it easier. Parents can be sponsored if they have most chilren in Australia. So, if you have 2 siblings in India, or one in UK, one in India, it doesn't count. Other options are costlier.
I'm actually considering the same move, US to Australia. Immigration looks fairly easy given the skill select program, and I have friends (not in tech) who recently emmigrated there and they're loving it so far. Currently doing the same kind of research. Salaries look lower, and general living expenses look higher but in exchange you get the security and peace of mind of a comprehensive healthcare system, nationalized pension, an educational system that won't bankrupt you/your kids and a culture that isn't scared everyone else is out to stab/shoot you in the back.
Couldn’t have said it better myself. I want peace of mind more than how much I am making. Looking at the current state of things and the extreme levels of hatred I don’t feel the same about America as I used to.
+1 I feel unsafe here since I have moved. But you will earn less and save less or no savings. Depends on your priority i.e. money over lifestyle and peace of mind.
Don’t be fooled by the prices of the Bay Area, Sydney is easily in the top 3 most expensive cities to live in based on rent / income.
Wassup with all H1B Indians interested in declining tinyass white people economies? Canada, Australia, Luxembourg, New Zealand, UK?
I feel like the common theme is nobody knows any city except Sydney. It's double the rent of any other city and everywhere in Australia pays the same wage. It's like moving to bay area but without the pay increase, so just fucking don't.
Have you considered Singapore ?
Dont consider buying a house or car.
Do you realize how long a boat across the Pacific would take? And forget about anyone joining you!

How can my idiot brother who does real estate afford this
I worked in Australia. It is INCREDIBLY expensive. A cup of coffee is $5+. Avocado toast is $18+. Most young people can not afford to purchase a house in any major city or surrounding suburb. Their economy has something going on that is not sustainable.
Thanks! BTW how much are we looking at for a house in suburbs? Also what year were you there?
But seafood, meat, Chinese food are cheaper. Ribs in Darling harbor was just around $20. $15 for a dozen oysters in fishmarket
