Have a phone screen coming up. Wondering what'd happen in case it doesn't go well. Would I get blocked for a year from applying to *ANY* role with Google? Is this a standard rule or open to application (by the recruiter)? The answer'd help me decide if it's worth it to go in for the interview now. Thanks! TC: Not enough
No matter how poorly you do on a Technical Phone Screen, you will not become “black-listed”. There are things which make you non hirable but poor performance on an interview is not one. A strong majority gets rejected its first time. However, if you do not pass you must wait 1 year to reapply.
Thanks, I was actually referring to the cool-down period itself. (Updated the terminology in my post). So 1 year's waiting is the price to pay for a poor performance. Great. Thanks again!
@macknows what are some of the things that could get you blacklisted?
I failed their tech on-sites 1.5 years ago but they immediately asked if I wanted a role as a TSE. Passed on that and took a SRE role elsewhere, and now they want me to interview again for SRE.
'Immediately' => by the same recruiter? I could imagine how that could come to pass. It's an application to ANOTHER requisition that *I* initiate (within the year) that I'm more concerned about.
Speaking from experience: the cool-down period only applies to the specific role you interviewed for. I should add that is pretty common for Google recruiters to try to route you towards TSE or (in some rarer cases) PM roles if you're a reasonably experienced SWE and the SWE screen/on-site doesn't work out.
Likely but some people have a second recruiter reached out and they got interview again. But generally you have a cold down for 1 year.
