Open question for Blind: Would you move to Portland from San Francisco. Caveat is that you would forego unvested RSUs, but get a slight bump (6-10%) in base salary. Why? Why not?
If you’re going to get a bump in your base salary you’re underpaid in SF. Oregon is nice, but Portland is the same shithole as SF maybe even bigger.
Cost of living is extremely cheaper in Portland. Want a 4K sqft house and a yard without giving up your whole paycheck?
I toured Portland during a road trip. Aside form the cable car(if that’s a thing you’re interested in) and a few parks/gardens and the Pittock Mansion, there was nothing to see.
Bay area will have more opportunities in the future.
This is true. After Portland, I would have to eventually move again if I wanted something new. Where as Bay Area, you can work at several top companies without dramatic relocations.
10% ? No
SF must be different for engineers. Majority of pay is in RSU and you are getting paid $450k+ TC. Maybe I should preface that I’m in a non technical role.
I would love to Portland in a heartbeat then. The COL alone justifies it. Take it from someone who moved from low COL to high COL for a near double salary - it didn’t improve my life in anyway. But I also am averse to traffic, and prefer having easy access to the peace of the outdoors. Money wise - I couldn’t replicate the same life I had, and am always frustrated with the small amount of space I have here. For those saying SF has more opportunities - it just depends on how you’re going to measure your life. After a certain amount of money - it brings no more happiness
I appreciate your thoughtful response. Yes - when I think about Portland I think about the future to raise a family, have a backyard and a dog, without having to invest 4-10 years of my time at a pre-IPO company just to scrounge a down payment for a home with a very large mortgage. I don’t mind competing in SF, it just seems less appealing as my fiancée and I are 31 and would like two kids by 35. Maybe I old fashioned.
Yes, because I love Portland.
I’m currently only making 210... 165+17+28. Is this essentially poverty level in SF? 🤷♂️
Why do you lose your rsu?
Because their unvested and OP is probably moving to a different company, hence OP will lose any unvested RSU.
Correct - hypothetically moving companies, so any unvested RSUs are lost.
