Craziest manager freak out stories
Anyone here had any manager freak outs? Recently a manger at my job was slack messaging in a public channel that someone/something was “epic incompetence” and “you failed miserably”. All of this because this person chose to use GCP CloudSQL instead of some other database. Anyone ever had manager like this? Edit: these are insane stories; keep’m coming
I hope I never have to work under a manager like that
Not manager but coworker when Microsoft had the big layoff of summer 2014. They came into my office and were upset about being laid-off despite them being a combative (albeit technically proficient) employee. In other words, smart but didn’t play well with others. I told them I was sorry, knew how they felt, and asked if I could do anything to help them. That sent them through the roof. People could hear them screaming on the other side of the building. Said how could I understand; I’d never been through a lay-off. Actually, I had...once before in my first job out of grad school and then another job where my job was not only outsourced, but I had to spend my remaining weeks training my replacements. I explained this and let them do most of the taking but they continued to yell at me about the company, etc. (Of course, in both situations, I didn’t get the sweet severance they did.) In my years of tech, I’m surprised more people don’t go off the handle since many have severe mental and/or social issues with limited coping skills.
BEAT THIS! It was my first job ever. It was my second week and my first 1 on 1 with my manager. The meeting was supposed to last 30 mins. He made me sit for 1hr 45mins! The meeting started with (I am quoting him here): “You must be scared as this place can get really competitive. Let me tell you something. The other guy who joined our team at the same time as you did, is not your friend. You must be thinking that you guys will work together, help each other settle down and blah blah. Not going to happen! You guys are not working with each other. You are working against each other. When, then time comes, you guys will be compared for promotions, comp, bonuses etc. You should know how to get ahead in this competition. This is hostile place. People get fired! It’s good that we are having this conversation instead of 6 months later because, by then, it might be too late!’ This was just the first 3 mins of a 1hour 45mins one-sided conversation while I was almost shitting my pants! Also, this was the start of a few years of mine under him!
Once after a bad month and a bunch of people getting canned, my manager sat me down and asked if I was committed. I was like “uhh sure?”
