I read a lot of posts about how to become a Data Scientist from a Software Engineer. But I haven't come across any which tells Data Scientists how to become Machine Learning Engineers. I have a sound knowledge on Statistics, pandas, numpy etc... but I would like to build and also deploy my models. My current job doesn't let me do that and I want to move to companies where I can do this. How can I make this transition? Has anyone does this before?
I am trying to understand the difference between data scientist and ml engineer. Can you explain what do you do currently and what do you want to do?
data science might be more research and problem oriented role. In this you are supposed to peovide insights in any way - using charts, sqls, any langyage or ml models. ml engineer will be coding using stats libraries and deploy model(more technical work)
At amazon, you’d want to target the Applied Science job family. You basically need to know data science and pass the software engineering bar. I should warn you though— at least on my team, most of the models that we deploy are pretty simple (huge scale), then we go back and improve them once they are deployed. The engineering need is pretty constant, but the science side can wax and wane.
ML engineer is a data scientist who is also a good software engineer. You can call it "software engineer with focus on ML" if you want. To become one you need to take end-to-end ownership of your data science projects, including pipeline building, deploying to production, monitoring and maintenance. A good way to learn all that is join a start-up. At big companies there could be too much specialization already, so chances you'll be doing everything are lower
Thanks!
I assume you were so hungry that after Amazon you tagged Postmates and Doordash :p
Had my dinner. Found some relevant roles there.
