Joined a new company, and I’ve been paired with another designer to maintain/develop a suite of product experiences. However, I don’t get a long with the other designer and often I find the person sharing horrible design practices and incorrect design advice with others as if it’s the holy grail. The person also thinks they are a “lead designer” but how can you be a lead designer if you were a team of 1 for a year? Recs on how to handle this situation? In my head it’s not my responsibility to change the person but man it’s getting old fast.
Ugh that seems like a tough situation since design is so subjective so it’s difficult to demonstrate why certain practices are poor. I feel like you need strong rhetorical skills and have sources/metrics to back up your claims.
Fair advice. My timing is off. V1 of the product is far down the pipeline and I’ve joined 4 months prior to the first release. So a lot has been established prior to joining and I’ll need to make a case for changes in Q1. Additionally, everyone knows there needs to be changes and I was particularly hired to inform product strategy and add visual polish. But the individual doesn’t want to give up reigns to any of it so I’m looking for better solutions other then just designing something and presenting it to leadership so create a top-down mandate.
Push for usability testing. Then use data to back up any changes you have suggested. That way it isn’t you vs them in a battle of opinions.
Are you a designer as well?
I mainly ask this cuz there’s different ways to approach this situation :)
I am.
