One of my direct reports has been secretly trying to build a case against me so that he could take my team lead role. He presented his ‘evidence’ to HR and thankfully, they could see through his lies and at supporting me with moving him out of the team. (Tbh I think he should be fired, but apparently that’s complicated). So now, I have to communicate to the team of his departure. How would you go about communicating it? I need to ensure they don’t gossip, are still focused on goals, still trust in leadership and feel secure. Deep down, I just want to tell them the complete the truth! But others have told me to keep it minimal
This isn’t about you right now, it’s about the team. Keep it minimal and say he’s moving for other opportunities or there’s a need elsewhere.
👆👆THIS.
lol, his direct reports are not stupid. They will gossip and try to speculate even more.
Do team leads have direct reports at Uber?
I had the same question
Do it the politically correct way: say that person X is moving on to pursue other opportunities and we thank him for his contributions.
Sounds like Dwight Schrute vs Michael Scott here :D
People talk! They would known anyways. Just tell them the official line of moving for a different opportunity. Folks would know the complete story anyways. Though can you elaborate a little on how you take someone’s role at Uber by going to HR??
Also, how can someone take a role? Won’t s/he have to talk to your manager in order to take the role? Your boss would need to agree on the eligibility criteria. What would HR do here?
Let the guy departing announce it
What was the evidence? Technical stuff? Recording of you saying grab em by the p*?
Technical stuff that literally doesn’t matter. But he thought by putting a light to it - it would make me look bad. It backfired on him cause it made him look small minded
What was the evidence?
This guy sounds like trouble, and yes probably should have been fired. The “it’s complicated” part probably suggests he might try to claim some kind of whistleblower retaliation if you did. Chances are the team knows exactly what’s going on. Agree with the posters above, can keep it short and sweet. Then look honestly at yourself and see if there is something you can do differently to avoid this from happening again. I had a complete psycho employee who pulled the same kind of stuff. The team picked up on it after her departure, morale improved considerably since she wasn’t constantly undermining everyone in management.
Tell the truth, the whole truth, nothing but the truth.
Tell em the truth of everything in the universe
Yes, need to set an example of him to strike fear into the rest of your direct reports. Establish dominance. There can be only one.
