They're definitely gaining traction in k12 schools, probably not so much amongst all the professional software engineers here

True, chrome is building a big base in schools. Not sure how long it will last though

I think this concept is going to stay for some time for the masses. Even for devs, with WebXR, WebAssembly and Python on the rise, a full blown native OS like Win/Mac would be rendered undesirable in many situations.

If Windows kernel = linux kernel = xbox kernel, it can kill the competition for ages. Windows phone with android like skin will be hit. Windows lite on tabs will be sold more than ipads.

Wrong audience to poll. Devs use macs but they are still overall dwarfed out by windows. Chrome will be the android pc of the poor, assuming they keep getting cheaper and cheaper

Google WFHeng OP Oct 14, 2019

I am dev but use windows off work. 😂

For browsing porn and playing games? :)

I'm surprised chrome os is still going. Usually Google is very quick at pulling the plug on failed projects

Google WFHeng OP Oct 14, 2019

I don’t think it’s considered failed internally

Chromebooks are honestly really great for most non-technical people

Google deeking Oct 14, 2019

Chromebook is widely adopted by smaller companies who don't have enough patience to deal with virus/office license/authorization w/ a dedicated IT team. In that aspect Chromebook works incredibly great.

It's a gimped version of Linux. I can't think of why a company would use that over standard Linux which has far more productivity features.

Google deeking Oct 14, 2019

@hydfb I use Linux at work and I can say those "productivity" features are worth nothing for non-tech users. Major Linux distribution lacks many things required in enterprise world - centralized authorization system (manually configured ldap is such a pain), auto upgrade w/ policy enforced, remote locking and a working video conference solution. Maybe there are room for another Linux distribution to win this market, but for now ChromeOS is the only competitive one.
