I last week became a US citizen through naturalization after 10+ year of immigration adventure. Next week I will start a new job, but I do not have a US passport. They also took my GC before the oath ceremony and gave me Certificate of Naturalization. I assume that document should be enough for work authorization(?). More importantly, my SSN card is still the old one. The question is do I need a new SSN card to start a new job? If I apply to a new card, they will hold my Certificate of Naturalization as proof until they issue a new card, which means I cannot show the certificate to the new job in the first day. Anyone had a similar experience?
Ask immigration imo
You don’t need a new SSN card. You can go to SSN office and remove any conditions that are in SSN card. If your card does not show any conditions then you are good.
Thanks for your help. Is my ssn record updated in the background after naturalization? Or do I need to inform SSA for my status change? BTW, my ssn card is 11 years old, and shows DHS authorization needed mark, since I was a student at the time. I have used that card, even after I got green card, without an issue. I wonder if naturalization have a different requirement on that.
Nothing happens automatically after you become a citizen with respect to SSN. You can go to the SSN office and ask them to update the records so that they have the correct info and anyone who does e-verify has the same correct info. It is not an urgent issue but better to have it updated.
Certificate of Naturalization = US Citizenships = proof you can work anywhere in the US.
First, now that you have a certificate of naturalization get your passport! US passport is the best ID you can have in the US. As long as you know your SSN and have a passport there is no need for the card til you get close to retirement. I lost mine in a move nearly 20 years ago and never bothered to replace it. Have never been asked for it.
Regarding updating the SSN status, you can just bring the Certificate to a local Social Security Office and have them update the information in their system. They will just check the Certificate and get it done on the spot. And I think as long as your SSN doesn’t have like “Not authorized to work” or anything special on it, it should be fine and they won’t collect it.
Seems like I should visit SSN office to update my status. I will not apply for new card though. Thank you!
Congrats on becoming a citizen! Does your new job know you as a GC holder or a citizen? Maybe just email them for HR’s sake. Tell them that you’ve been naturalized and that you’ll send them a copy of your passport once you get it. I became a citizen and never formally told my then-employer, a long while later they happened to need to update visa info for all non-US employees and I showed up with a passport and they were like, oh.
Great story you have😃🇺🇲 l told the future employer that I am a new citizen. Is it possible to submit passport after you start working? I mean is there usually a grace period for submitting documentation?
They only care about your status when you’re not a citizen.
Congratulations to you. Unfortunately, many qualified people (like yourself) will be denied this joy due to their country of birth.
What kind of job is new job? At DOD?

You should be good. No need for a new SSN card
