My team recently merged with a larger organization and my new title is SWE Manager. I was an IC before. The way things are going, it looks like I'm still gonna be playing the role of an IC going forward because there doesn't seem to be any position available for another manager. So technically I won't be able to get the experience for my title. However, on paper I'll still be a manager, which sucks. Does this sound familiar to anyone? I think I know the answer, it's either be political and force your way up to actually be a manager or get the hell out. If I get out, then I'll have to climb up again at another company from an IC. π
There's a reason why usually the first question a recruiter has is what's your current title...
Right. But how about actually doing the thing that the title says? When you move forward, the common question that you get asked is: "how many ppl did you manage?"
No recruiters asked me this question, but title really matters
In my opinion you are not a manager. And I won't hire you for a manager position which requires experience irrespective of your current title.
Thank you for confirming my intuition. I personally think this too. If I cannot get to do and get experience for what the title says, then does it really matter what it says on paper?
Yes, it does. It decides your compensation range.
Only $
Titles matter depending on what role you are looking for. Most tech companies will not hire an EM without past EM experience. Thatβs likely the area where title matters the most, otherwise it usually isnβt too big of a deal since most companies offer the same comparable job levels of EM vs IC
Yes but only up to a limit. More than that can look good and seem like they could be fun but are probably a waste. Besides, after a certain point, of they're too big, buying clothes is a pain. Wait, you said titles nvm.
In the end...only leetcode matters...
Titles are all that matter screw TC
Can't tell if you're trolling or stating your opinion. I'll consider as the latter.
