Do you or not support universal health care like that of most other developed countries like UK, Australia etc.

I support universal healthcare alongside strict laws against unhealthy behaviors such as overeating, physical inactivity, etc.
    Feb 237
    • This. If you are providing free health care, insist on maintaining reasonable blood cholesterol and healthy habits.

Workday, it can’t be more dystopian than the status quo, aren’t 60% or more Americans overweight?

    • What if someone can’t excercise and has a pre existing condition
      Feb 23
    • You don't need to have blanket conditions, all I'm asking is sensible policy. The people who can't can be excluded. Enforcing this is good because the government can truly help the people in need, like the major diseases or accidents.

Rather than strict rules against these behaviors, I’d support increased deductibles and/or penalties at tax time for engaging in these riskier behaviors.

Poll is a mistake. Universal health care is far cheaper than our current system. We pay the most (1/6 of our gdp) and get the worst care per capita of any industrialized country
    Feb 236
    • OpenTable Meliodas
No one gets sick on a per-capita basis.

There is a reason the rest of the world comes here for medical care at Mayo Clinic.

Effective medicine means things like preventative care and access. Which we completely lack. We also have massive inefficiencies from a 3rd party middle man rationing care based on actuarial tables
      Feb 23
    • OpenTable Meliodas
Anyone can go to the emergency room, and as long as the staff aren’t bigots, the patient will receive care.

      Sounds pretty effective and efficient

Meliodas - anyone can go to the emergency room. And anyone can them receive an itemized bill that will bankrupt them completely. For artificially inflated costs that the rest of the world does not pay.
      Feb 24
    • Tableau Ydobon
Not to mention that emergency room treatment doesn't work for things like cancer, diabetes, etc. And emergency room treatment is far more expensive than preventive medicine.

This question is a wrong question to ask in the first place. Healthcare resource is limited in this country, and # of doctors graduated each year is constrained by law. Not solving the root cause, but asking whether people should have universal coverage?

My problem with universal healthcare is that it is rarely universal. Healthcare becomes politicized when the government is in control and unpopular minorities don’t get services for that which the majority disapproves of.

That and the long waiting times for common conditions, e.g., UK & Canada folks that come to the U.S. for treatment rather than wait eight months.

    • OpenTable Meliodas
And those that do, trade quality for cost.

I’m not interested in the cheapest solution.
      Feb 23
    • So because some people may not get it, nobody should?
      Feb 23
    • OpenTable Meliodas
      Who said that?

If everyone can’t get it, it isn’t universal, by definition.
      Feb 23
    • Tableau Ydobon
Except that the data do not support the notion that they are trading quality for cost. Health care quality and outcomes in other countries are, for the most part, comparable to the U.S

In particular, every other major industrialized nation pays less and gets more than we do. Seems like maybe we should learn from them.
      Feb 24
    • OpenTable Meliodas
For the most part? Edge cases matter when it comes to healthcare.

What I have learned is that I’m not a fan of the long waits for common procedures.
      Feb 24
    • You said that Meliodas. Just because something *could* become corrupted when corrupt people are in charge doesn't mean we shouldn't do it. That line of reasoning can be used against education, law enforcement, or anything else really.
      Feb 24
    • And why do you think universal healthcare would lead to long waits?
      Feb 24
    • OpenTable Meliodas
Yes, and there is ample historical evidence that government will persecute unpopular minorities.

Three years ago the government wouldn’t even recognize my marriage for no rational reason. Now, I’m supposed to trust it with my healthcare?

I think universal healthcare would lead to long waits, because that is what happens in Canada & the U.K.
      Feb 24
    • I came to US from Australia which has universal healthcare, I found the waits here longer than back home.
      Feb 24
    • Tableau Ydobon
The waits are just as long in the US for many of these procedures, and even longer for people who cannot afford the care (i.e. never). What the US has is fundamentally broken. We pay more and get less than any other major industrialized nation. If you don't like the concept of universal health care, what is your alternative?

I support basic health care for everyone. Meaning: you are diagnose with cancer, you get all your treatment paid for, you have any illness like that, and you are covered. You break a bone, you’re covered, etc. Now.... that being said: you have lung cancer cause you’re a smoker: fyou and pay up b1tch! You have bad teeth cause you’re a meth addict: go fyourself and get a second mortgage on your house to pay for a dentist... you has diabetes because you’re overweight... sorry, I’ll cover a membership to an anytime fitness, the rest is on your tab!

Is that really the best argument you can come up with? Seriously? That doesn't even pass the giggle test as a reason to not support universal health care

    • OpenTable Meliodas
It is the current state of things.
      Feb 26
    • Tableau Ydobon
That has nothing at all to do with whether universal health care is a good idea and whether it should be supported. You're flailing and it's pathetic.
      Feb 27
    • OpenTable Meliodas
If it is such a great idea, get the laws changed.

    • Optum zkzkzkzk
There’s a distinction between full universal healthcare and basic universal healthcare. This is like the free higher education argument. Sure, I’ll give you free school, if you maintain B’s or higher. Otherwise, pay.

If the fact that healthcare resource is limited does not change, you have to earn it, not to claim it.
