Now that it’s illegal for potential employers to ask for your current salary in California, will your past salary information still show up on a background check?
Did it ever before? You also have the right in CA to request a free copy of that background check. I did once and didn't notice any salary info in it
Oh I’m not sure. I just know some employer background checks use to ask for your salary history. I have no idea if they actually checked.
It doesn't.
No
No. I received my copy of an employer background check this year. It contains NO information about pay. Period. A-Check Global performed a background check and verified dates and names of employers. Past residences linked to SSN (they will find addresses you leased / owned even without you performing change of address for your license). Criminal history via a nationwide search as well as querying each of the counties you’ve lived and worked in. No compensation or credit history.
Background check contains your previous working history, including starting date and last date, always. Your titles could be included, if those info was disclosed from previous companies.
Some companies share salary data. With new laws in CA unlikely they’d be able to check this in that state. Some details @ https://krebsonsecurity.com/2017/10/equifax-breach-fallout-your-salary-history/
I had this happen to me. A CA employer ran a background check and it had prev salaries from 2 other employers. All 3 are large well known companies btw. I was super sketched out and pretty pissed.
Did that impact hiring decision eventually?
Nope
If it does, I'd use that to see what all my coworkers were making to know if I'm being underpaid
