Hi, this is a question to all the eng managers out there. How do you stack rank a high performing team? Do you nitpick at little things that the employee does poorly? Do you compare him/her to teammates and showcase their accomplishments — which may be larger. It’s always a tough convo to have — I was just wondering what approaches other eng managers take.
Peepee size
Take notice on who’s the one that’s actually get shit done. Meaning, the one that actually pushes tasks over the finish line. Frequently there are difficult tasks that get passed around by people but never actually finishes until one person finally has the grit to finish it. Even in high performing team, there’s always that one person that has both the knowledge and grit to push boundaries. Not everyone can highlight their accomplishments well, but you’ll only notice productivity drop after they leave.
The reality is you are compared to your peers on the amount and quality of work done to get the highest raise. May be I haven't been on a team with a manager who does things differently. Anyway that is how things work on my team. There are peers who work 24/7 a day (pushing code at 2am). I tried keeping up but decided to enjoy life more. Did take a hit during review tho 🤷🏻♂️
I always wonder how that's possible. People need to sleep, use transportations and eat - that's easy 10-12 hours a day. Where are those people getting their extra time to be more productive?
They live close to work like < 20 mins commute. They go home at 5/6pm but work from home after. Come to work at 9.
I was literally ranked by age
That sucks — are you sticking it out or looking to move on?
First sort by age then by TC and then by NW
Lol...this isn’t a queue where you stack by age..You would get that insight on who has a greater set of analytical skills or rather unique set of skills in contrast to others...
What’s NW?
