Engineering-Driven Culture

I'm tired of where I'm at. I just want to work with solid engineers who inspire me to be better and are happy with where they're at. Engineers who have this today, where do you work / where should I apply?

Google. But you need to be careful with the team.

How does someone interviewing know if they're joining the right team or not? Last time I interviewed (a while ago), the offer was for a specific team without my input taken into account.

Generally you have a team matching phase where you talk to different manager. Most of the people(who have a generic skill set) go through this phase. However if you have very specific skill set then you might be slotted for a specific team. Team matching happens after the interviews.

  • When you say engineers who inspire, what/who do you have in mind? Engineers are pretty nameless outside their own organizations - do you want mentor ship from someone you respect, or to learn by osmosis, sucking lessons from a great environment?

I'm good at finding my own mentors as long as quality people are around. The culture of excellence is something that makes it easier to stay hungry and motivated but is hard to find

Was there before, but it felt like what I was working on was so marginally incremental for the company. That bothered me then but might be worth it now

Now I๏ธ feel you are describing a different problem. Impact is different from quality engineering work. Every company has a good mix of all kinds of teams. What you want is the holy grail: great engineering, happy engineers and high impact. In my experience that is very difficult to find regardless of company.

I completely agree. That's why I'm reassessing my previous stance on impact and am considering giving up the impact for great engineering and happy engineers

What's wrong with Uber? They have top notch engineering including self driving cars.

    • Uber is a microcosm of different teams but I still agree with e2f. Why not find a different team within Uber? Since you have already worked at FB and did not like the offered teams at Google, I canโ€™t imagine what else would work for you.
