I have 10yoe and finished my first year in a big N company. I'm trying to understand the role a bit better and where the lines should be drawn. Basic question I'm asking: Do you feel like you have the highest levels of freedom in your work or do you feel like you're implementing your manager's vision of the product? TC: 275k
I had almost zero autonomy as an EM my first year here. No clearly defined responsibilities or ownership or division of labor on the team LT, incompetent design leaders, weekly reviews, clueless management with no innovation / incubation experience that can’t even keep track of their own product teams, zero actionable guidance or feedback but constant churn and re org. Terrible experience. I switched back to IC track. Since the EM experience was the entire reason I joined msft I will probably be job hunting in the spring for EM roles outside the company.
only at smaller companies (say under 200) is your manager there to tell you what to do. at bigger companies his “vision” is irrelevant. you don’t seem to understand the job of a manager
With a mostly absentee manager myself I do whatever the f* I want. Thankfully I am aligned with stakeholders.
