FAANG SWE job or free MSCS?

Between the option of working at google as a SWE or going to an Ivy mscs program with 100% tuition paid, which would you choose? My goal is to be a scientist/researcher one day.

This is a no brainer. Take the google offer and work hard and level up. Make bank. How many people from a ms cs program even in an Ivy League school make it to google? And even if they do, most likely they would get low tc with an entry level designation. Imagine the opportunity cost lost if you left the google offer and take this leap of faith.

Google and then do the OMSCS ML program part time if you really want the MSCS degree.

Google offer is valid for 1 year. MSc courses are required in the first 8 months. On month 9, join Google full-time and switch MSc to part time. Scholarship will cease but that's ok, you can afford it using your Google salary.

Google will still reimburse 2/3 tuition. Win/win

Ask google for internship instead of full-time during mscs. Opportunity cost is definitely extremely high(to the tune of 350kish even with a free mscs), you could've been making 250k as a newly promoted L4 at Goog after 2 years of experience(obviously with good ratings, etc.). Still your decision to make. Honestly you can't go wrong either way.

That’s a good point, I’m not too concerned about money, but also don’t want to be so prestige-driven either. Thanks!!

I would say, take up the job at Google. And immediately apply for Online MS in CS @Georgia Tech(Fall 2019). The program is specifically designed for working professionals. That way you will get a couple of months to settle down at google before your MS program starts. All the best!!

Do both at the same time.

I’d complain about you not stating which school it is, but in this case it doesn’t even matter which school it is, google is the easy choice. Do a part-time masters at Stanford or Georgia Tech while at Google.
