I'm interviewing with FB for a product data scientist role but I'm only interested in relocating to NYC. Although they advertise the position for the NYC position, it seems like this is mostly just a marketing ploy to attract applicants. Most (all?) of the positions are in Menlo Park, but the recruiter mentioned that *some* product data science positions are open in NYC... She was very vague about it, saying that they're rare, she needed to talk to her manager, that I should just get deeper into the process first, etc. etc. Anyone have more context around this? I would love to interview for the position if I can work in the NYC office, but I don't want to just waste my time to find out at the end that MLP is the only option. If NYC is a real option, anyone know how to best navigate / negotiate this? More context on differences between NYC and SF offices in terms of teams, focus, etc. would be welcome too.
Just get MPK job. It’s better to join there first, then after you hit a year you can transfer to another team in NYC. I really think it’s a good idea to join there first.
hm what are the reasons it's better to join MPK first instead of NYC? bc it's HQ so I would learn more?
Yea, many more teams to choose from. It’s good to be close to the action first. I know a handful of FB friends that have done similar. I feel like FB only actually hires in those places if you are already there.....if you are already here in Bay Area it’s for bestz. MPK campus is amazing too.
I was in a similar position (different office different role but I had a preference for a particular office) and it was helpful to let the recruiter know that I only wanted to interview if there was a shot at being in the office I wanted to be in. They were able to make it happen.
yea I expressed that pretty clearly so hopefully that'll be the case for me as well
