FB or Uber?...Also FB E6 expectation estimate.

Uber Riddle
Oct 14, 2018 32 Comments

I'm L6@Uber. Finished FB interviews and am going to get an E6 offer. My feedback from the interviewers and referrals had been great. Recruiter is asking for my salary expectations. What numbers should I start with and any negotiation tips?

FB E6 bar has gone down considerably, google E5s easily make it to FB E6. On the flip side I’ve never heard of a FB E6 make it to Uber L6.

I really think OP should go for E7 at FB.

I disagree. I say to do your research (like this thread) to see what is possible but then to say the first number. All other negotiations will then center around that first number. If you say it, it will be high; if they say it, it will be low. This is from experience where I’ve done it both ways.

Depends on interview performance and yoe. But regarding TC/Impact/Scope, Fb E6 definitely cannot match Uber L6. That's why I am curious to learn OP's thoughts here.

Yeah. Op would suddenly realize that his/her impact/scope/responsibilities/importance has reduced if he actually takes up the offer. But thats maybe okay, if he/she is just looking for change and willing to go a level lower for that.

High L6, for what it's worth.

I wouldn’t focus on “salary”. Instead just all-in compensation including refreshers, bonus, 401k match, RSUs, base, etc. aim for 600k/yr and accept slightly less

Op, note that FB Level 6 is one step lower than Uber L6. Its not a bad choice, obviously, but you would have lower impact/scope/responsibilities/importance when you move, and you should be okay with that.

Agreed. L7 would be even harder to survive. Supposedly it's high L6, for what it's worth.

I always let them make a first move and then counter by something higher than what I know they can offer. We usually land on the max of what they can do. For e6, that max would be around 600k/year (including sign on) for new hires.

E6 expectations are super high and they expect you to contribute starting first week. Unless the offer is great, stay at Uber
