I think I was underleveled when joining FB at E5 with 15 yoe less than a year ago. I'm not loving the culture and engineering practices here and thinking of making a run at Google. I'm expecting the recruiter to ask me my current level and setup my interviews as such. I don't think lying about my level is a good idea, and I'm not sure I want to put in the time and effort to get to E6 here before moving. Has anybody leveled up to L6 going from Facebook to Google? Is it pretty much impossible? I hear that getting promoted at Google is very hard, so I would rather not go in underleveled from the start.
Ask to the recruiter to setup an L6 loop based on your years/quality-of experience. If you don’t want to lie, you must withhold you’re an E5 because once the recruiter learns that you won’t have a chance at becoming L6.
Refuse to disclose your current level and compensation. Ask to setup l6 interview loop. Profit. I know people who done this, you’ll be fine. Perform well during interviews.
Sorry dont have answer for you. But what do you not like abou FB culture?
eBay, search on blind. This is one of many post where an engineer wants to leave fb. Mainly the engineering culture and WLB.
The fact that the performance review cycle motivates the vast majority of decisions and is so engrained in the culture is my biggest gripe. I have no personal connection to the products and the engineering processes can leave a lot to be desired. Surely these things vary a lot team to team and org to org, but I'm not digging the general vibe here.
