I believe it.

Most of the criticisms of the performance review system apply to literally any review system at any tech company. There is pressure to perform. That's not new or particularly controversial. This is low-effort clickbait by writers that can't do real journalism.

Spotify Lajuheit Jan 18, 2019

Not sure I agree. The contrast between the public image that Facebook tries to convey (sunny Californian optimism and idealism) and the reality behind the curtain (practically North Korea, where Dear Leader must be happily obeyed) is what the journalist is calling attention to. It’s possible you might have missed this because you work there and cannot see the contradiction.

Facebook DRGL26 Jan 18, 2019

Its hilarious you're telling somebody who works at Facebook what it's like to work at Facebook. It's possible you have no idea what you're talking about.

Someone is feeling pain in the ass

Calling Facebook “cult like” is a huge stretch. Lol Otherwise I don’t disagree with most things in the article, however I don’t think anything mentioned is unique to Facebook. That’s pretty much working in Corporate America. I say that as someone who’s worked at several companies across various industries.

Genentech elffy Jan 18, 2019

It's funny how Facebook gets so much negative press. There are sooooo many bad companies in America (unethical or bad to work for). Facebook is a company so of course has it's good and bad parts but seriously it's a great company relatively.

LinkedIn lnkdpm Jan 20, 2019

That’s because success attracts scrutiny. Not saying if that’s reasonable or not, but that’s how it is. Very few companies in the history of corporate America ever had the impact and success that fb had a decade, and I am sure each one of those went through the same level of scrutiny as well (Amazon, google, Tesla, ge and maybe a few more..)

Capital One RE5PECT Jan 18, 2019

Stack ranking sucks. C1 uses the same system. Encourages a cutthroat environment and discourages collaboration. Rest of it seems pretty typical. It’s a corporate workplace, suck it up and smile.

Box BPfa03 Jan 18, 2019

Worked at one company that did stacked ranking. managers favorites got 5s regardless of their performance or value. Never ever ever again.

Amazon Proud_Dem Jan 18, 2019

Lol this is joke. Come to Amazon if you want some action. Snowflakes.

Facebook PureWin Jan 18, 2019

Calling an organization “cult-like” is a fun way to make it impossible to properly respond. No matter what actual FB employees say, the response will just be “but you’re already brainwashed!”

Netflix tnCP40 Jan 18, 2019

Worked there for more than 5 years. Can confirm the cult like culture. Worst I seen was 2.5k marketers repeat the facebook mission statement in unison, twice. At an offsite/conference.

Microsoft wiywyai Jan 22, 2019

Worked in marketing ? Don't they make it into a cult to spread the vibe across employees

Netflix N/As Jan 23, 2019

Worked in ads product but attended their sales conference. I’d say other orgs when it comes to the kool-aid aren’t very different though. Especially, with the newer mission statement that misleads from the real company metrics that matter: user growth, time spent, and revenue. “Facebook's mission is to give people the power to build community and bring the world closer together.” -cultish/creepy
