Feeling guilty about H1B

My H1B was picked in lottery this year but I got an RFE. Meanwhile, I got a job offer with double the TC in Bay Area. Since I didn’t want to wait for 6 months (RFE response + non-pp transfer), I jumped ship and abandoned this H1B. I have 2 more chances at lottery, but I can’t stop thinking about if I had made the right decision. Leaving he lottery for the last chance is not ideal since I have to leave the country at such a short notice. So, realistically only one chance. Want to add that I was really unhappy in my current company, and the new job is the best opportunity I can hope for. Would you do the same if you were in my situation? TC: 160 to 325

Take the new job. In the current visa scenario, just solve for career growth and handle visa problems as and when they come up. Seems like a no brainier. H1B lottery chod, tu life me jeetega!

Brave decision! You need guts to do this. Stop worrying u will get picked next year. You will realize it one day that this was the best decision you took.

Agree with microsoft above. Darr darr ke jeena kya jeena, kab tak ghum ke aasu peena, kab tak karega tu katar kandran, kuch bhi ban bas kayar mat ban.

And new TC of 325k? Dang bhai

You had next 30 years to earn extra 100+k and you couldn't wait for 6+ month to get ur h1b. Hopefully this doesn't backfire. Good luck.

I really felt like I had a great opportunity and I wanted to seize it. I felt like I didn’t want to be dragged down by H1b and have a career setback by wasting my time here.

Although TC played a role in my decision, it’s not the only reason.

I did the exact same thing and I am happy about my decision. I was really unhappy at my current job and didn’t want to risk staying if H1B transfer got rejected later on. Joining Amazon next month :)

are you joining as sde 2 or something? I am moving as sde 1, tc rise from 100 to 160, but i am not sure if I should abandon this h1b chance

No. I am joining as a Data Engineer L4. It totally depends on your priorities. If you don’t mind sticking to your current job for some more time, it might be better to switch after H1.

I do some DL, but I’m not an expert. Combination of luck and hard work at my current company.

How much of the 325 is fictional options? Or it's all liquid? Seems unreal

Infosys whoz82 Oct 16, 2018

I think you chose the right option. H1B is a rabbit hole that sucks you in and you won’t realize it. Be aggressive and do the best you can for yourself and your career. These things will sort themselves out. H1B is just one option. Like Baba Rancho had said... “Kaabil bano...” you know the rest. 🤣
