I had onsite with one of the second tier tech company in Seattle. They are seeking expert in very specific area which requires ML skills, deep learning as well. Their VP reach out to me personally from LinkedIn. All interviews went well except one. I feel negative valence of interviewer during interview from his questions and nonverbal behaviors. He was the only guy asking pure coding question. The question was NP-complete graph question. He refuse to give any hint, and did not answer any question I asked. I try to solve the question. Before starting writing code I try to explain the idea, he did not listen, do his job in his computer. When I finish solution, he said it will not work for this reason. I recognize in that point the question is NP-complete. He said yes but there is a solution. I told him how can I solve it, ask him if he wants me to continue my solution. He said no, he wanted to give time for me to ask questions. He answered only one question and did not allow to ask second one and escape. I try to do my best and just thought him as a strange guy. Today recruiter told me that they want follow up interview which will be coding. The feedback is good. So annoying. What you guys think?
I believe the guy did not want to work with me. I am significantly younger then him, but the title they were considering giving me was same as his title. However this role requires specialized knowledge in which I have PhD and industry experience. He tried to prove that the role is not something what I am interested. As a result, they also want to change title from ML engineer to applied scientist. I am okay with that as long as compensation is same. Many a lot more senior people are positive. I do not want to miss the opportunity bcz of one guy whom I won’t work directly.
Is the guy that interviewed you someone you would have to work for or with on a regular basis? If not and you think you’d like to still continue the process, I’d suggest (if you’re comfortable) giving some of that feedback to the recruiter. They may not be aware of his behavior and could either coach on it or get them removed from the loop moving forward
Let the recruter know that you will be moving on to another opportunity and point out it's because of that specific guy whom you absolutly don't want to work with.
Exactly.
Can you guys mention about your reasoning behind your suggestion? I think in ideal world you are absolutely right, but interviewing sucks
