Just joined Google 6 months ago as a SWE! After 2 months, I realized I don’t find the SWE role challenging and now I’m bored! I’d like to switch to PM (within Google or @FAANG). 1. Should I do it sooner or later? Now? After a year? After my promo in SWE? 2. I think I’d prefer interviewing widely over going through the hassles of PM rotation and ladder switch at Google. Any thoughts on this? PS: In 2-3 years, I’m considering building my own start up Btw, I forgot to mention I love money, and I don’t see any well-paid position in SWE considering the boringness of the job I have a PhD in CS (ML+ Security) from MIT, 2 Years of Postoc @ Cornell TC: 250
The bubbly nature of your writing (emojis and exclamation points everywhere) juxtaposed with the content of the post is off-putting, I’d try to fix that if you want people to respond better to you, especially if you’re going towards a more people-oriented role. I have the same interests as you, and will apply to an MBA program next year. I’d try to transition as soon as you can. Look into the RPM program at google, you need to have worked there a year
Thanks! Emoji’s are removed. I’ll probably apply in December too, however, many told me it’s not worth it. Could your share your thoughts?
Haha I was kinda a dick in my last post, emojis can be nice sometimes :) The return on interest (ROI) for MBA is something a lot of people debate and disagree about. For me, it is worth it if it’s from Stanford , Harvard, or Wharton. It can be a life-changing experience and it’s hard to put a dollar price on it. If all you care about is money, you might be better off going SWE to PM at FANG, but you also seem to care about having more power and not being bored at work. It would open more doors than going directly to PM from SWE would, from what I can tell, and the network you would be in after graduating and the people you meet during the program will be extremely valuable as well There was a great thread about elite MBA degree on blind recently, try searching for it
Look up PM rotation program on Moma
You'll need to leverage you EQ skills to build a network, then use it to make the transition. - fellow beaver
PM transition is for those who couldn’t cut it as SWE. Find some work that isn’t so easy.
SWEs are pawns, making little money considering what they do. Our CEO was a PM too.
So you want power OP? Cool. Our CEO also worked at McKenzie and has an MBA before even joining. I think you want a switch for the wrong reasons, but sure go ahead ~ if I were you I'd try to ask for (or indirectly get involved in) more and bigger projects rather than just fixing bugs...
