Getting data science interview calls
My wife decided to career in data science and she is doing her masters now. She previously has experience as developer in a not so known startup. She has taken few data science related courses. She also build up her portfolio with few machine learning projects. Did few online courses for data science and ML as well and now looking for internships . We found that its insanely hard to get calls in data science field. She did around 200 applications but she got couple of calls from small companies but could not get the offers. Reading on internet felt like other people face this problem too. I would be greatful if someone can shed some light on how hiring for data scientists happens. Any tips for resume? My wife is really depressed because of this. Are there any data science related communities that can mentor/ help?
Data science is saturated with ivy league kids and PhDs
These days everybody wants to be a data scientist.

I don’t agree with most of the comments. It’s always difficult to get that first break but once you are past that it’s great. There are very few data science internships in the market and hence it’s very difficult to get one. In my personal experience companies and startups get a a lot of PhD and Ivy League resumes so it’s a very competitive space. Ask you wife not to give up and do what she is passionate about. Software engineering is significantly less competitive at the same pay level as data science. Your wife is headed in the wrong direction.
Aren't there more software engineers than data scientists, given how new ds field is. Ds jobs have also been growing crazily. Correct me if I am wrong
You are wrong. There are usually 5-10x as many software engineering as data scientist jobs, and there are many academic backgrounds that feed into data scientist, and very few academic backgrounds that give a leg up in software engineering. This leads to a massive supply of candidates applying for DS and a severe shortage of candidates applying for SWE.
