I'll be starting at Google soon as a SWE, and I need to decide which laptop I want. To any current or former Google employees, what should I pick for my laptop and why? My manager said the team is split 50/50 between Chromebooks and Macs.

Current TC: $73000

It doesn't matter. You probably won't be using your laptop to code at all. You will be using your desktop, or remotely accessing your desktop instead. I just keep my work laptop at home for occasional WFH.

I picked MacBook because of the larger screen. I refuse to use a laptop that does not have a 15" monitor. The MacBook touchbar is a shitty invention tho.

Touch bar could have been great. What a waste

You can code via ssh or some other web means you will discover yourself once joined.

TC is pretty normal for a lot of parts of the country. Congrats on the jump, OP!

My exact same response considering that NG mandates ABET education for New Hires.

  • Bro is that even a hard decision? Why would someone pick a chrome book over Mac. Your manager is probably lying. What did he have in the interview?

Lol, you are not a Googler. Lots of Pixelbooks. Battery life is excellent and it's very light. What does a MBP get you?

    • Microsoft wbYt28
MBP gets you a real OS that can run more than just a browser.

Pixel book. Anyway you can't install any software on mb. Pixel book can acts as tablet or laptop

You will be able to switch within two weeks if you do not like the device. BTW I picked Chromebook, but definitely request a desktop too (idk why that is called optional on the form, you definitely should have a good desktop).

Honestly, it’s google — if something ain’t working about your tech set-up, you will have 0% difficulty making a change. But really just get the Mac.

Get the pixelbook. Better battery life, lighter, and functionally the same (your Mac will also only be a browser machine, there's nothing else to run).

TC of 73k, better go with a Chrome book, Apple products will bankrupt you.

If you're working on a Chrome product or something heavily used by education, get a Chromebook.

When I was there several years ago, folks mostly used mbp. Yes, you aren't allowed to use Microsoft software, but that doesn't mean you won't need regular programs at some point... Like, maybe you want to dabble in design at some point and you download sketch, XD, or balsamic. Maybe you just want something personal on there.. :p Basically you give up flexibility by doing away with the desktop.

The keyboard on the new Mac book pro is a piece of shit. I was using older Mac book air (with non-butterfly keyboard) for 5 years in google. My last mb air broke and I got new mbp for replacement. This crap started missing keyboard presses in a week or so. I replaced the laptop twice, the last time it took a month or so for the same problem to appear. Finally I got lenovo thinkpad with ubuntu and am happy with it. So recommending this one
