Google Recruiter pushing GCP team match only

I passed on-site L5, and recruiter is exclusively a recruiter for GCP. I’ve heard a few things about the group, but that’s not a big deal for me, there are a few teams that interest me. But I have a lot of interest for some teams outside of it as well. My specialty is Java backend, but google cloud and infra is mostly C++. Which teams might be doing large distributed systems, highly scalable java services?

Recruiter is pushing for a team match in GCP though, and said we can consider outside of GCP later. I don’t want to push the recruiter since I haven’t passed HC yet, and it’s all in their hands and might be told “no teams available”.

Is it common to be steered towards a specific group and not have much team matching for outside of that group? I wonder if recruiter gets commission or some sort of metrics on the people they place in their own group, and would have no incentive to hand me off to another group. Should I push the recruiter a bit more, or how should I handle this?

If you haven't passed HC, you haven't passed yet.

Like I said, I've heard HC is going away with GCP.

Unless they spin it off into its own company I find that difficult to believe.

@wellHoney, do you work at GCP, can you confirm it's not true?

@JOANY I experienced something very similar with 2 Google recruiters. It seems like they are just unwilling to look beyond Cloud and when I did ask them if they even tried, they would always say they did. I ended up getting matched on a team in Cloud (not GCP) but would have preferred to have a few more options on hand. Other friends who went through team match last year had 3 - 6 options in different Orgs

It's kinda weird that they want you to go through HC again unless HC made a note asking for you to be only matched to Cloud (not even sure if this is possible but I feel like I ended up in the same boat and the recruiters wouldn't tell me). Might be worth asking the recruiter if HC wants you to be only matched to specific Orgs

I’m still waiting to be matched with a team, only been matched with cloud teams so far that wouldn’t be good fit. Trying to get recruiter to push my profile to other orgs, preferably with java distributed systems. If anyone can refer me to any such team I’d be forever grateful!

Was told after team match I’d be sent to HC. As far as I know there aren’t any GCP specific HC. The only reason to go through HC again is that HC approved based on a specific team match and if you’re in a different team it may make less sense / worse fit.

In my case no. All completely was behavioral. Tell me a time you disagreed with a coworker. Tell me a time you had to fight for your opinion on a decision. Etc

Best advice I got was to have like 4-5 stories around tough situations and steer the conversation to these prepared stories. This way you’re not fishing your memory for these stories and they generally apply since they are behavioral. Good luck! When is your on site?

Recruiters are scumbags and Google recruiters are the worst. Ask them to assign you to someone else if they are hell-bent on getting that extra bonus by signing you up with cloud. Their financial incentives are not aligned with your well-being.

Why are you team matching first? Aren’t most people HC first? Asking cuz my friend is waiting for HC decisions and haven’t done team match

I’ve heard mixed. Some do HC first some do team matching first. Sometimes it’s just in parallel. They said they prefer team match first so that you can get manager sign off / support to increased the chances.

Right... and here I am telling a GCP recruiter, “Hey, can you uh... send me to another group?”

I had the same impression...if recruiter are gcp specific I think their target is to fill positions within the teams they recruit for...so no incentive to match you with other orgs
