Tech people desire to achieve a job at FAANG, preferably G. But people who start their career with Google in great team, or moved to Google within first 5 years of starting career, what's your plan now? Where will you even switch? Do you still keep doing leetcode or explore the non-geeky part of you? What are your life goals now?
Albertsons...
Two tragedies of life - Getting what you want and not getting what you want. Google employee suffer from former.
I would say the goal should never be working at FAANG. It should be enjoying the work you do.
It should be working at FAANG
Mentioned in post that if you are at G in great team already, kinda was implying you got what you wanted and enjoying it.
Tech people do not, in fact, desire that as a general rule.
Just explore what I want to do, which happens to be geeky.
They can switch to fb/Netflix.
They start their own startups. And faang dream is bs after you go that level. You start to chase what you like, ofc considering you are ambitious.
Considering smart and ambitious people go to Google, still I would say at most 10% would only start a startup. Rest of people will not.
I don’t think smart and ambitious people has google as overall goal necessarily
I'd either start my own thing next or switch internally to challenge myself to learn and do something completely different, there are a lot of interesting opportunities within Google itself.
Next step, you get sucked into the rat race, you're professional life revolves around execution, design docs, leadership, perf, promo, politics, relationship building. And then bam, next thing you know, you're a burnt out senior/staff engineer/TLM and all you want to do is to trade everything in just so you could retire and not worry about work. But you know, by that point, you're kind of cuffed to work.
Says someone working at IBM
We are not, I am joining one of FANG soon. How do you think I got this question?
