Google team transfer to Waymo

I will be joining Google really soon and was wondering how easy the internal transfers are.
I am specifically interested in transferring to Waymo.
Can someone share their experience transferring from a regular team (i.e. search, ads, Youtube, Maps, etc) to some specialized team (Waymo, Brain, DeepMind, etc.)?

I would also appreciate the detailed process of how it works. Do you just contact the hiring manager and ask for the transfer?

I think you have to re-interview?

Deep Mind and Waymo are different companies, it is not an “internal” transfer. The process may be facilitated, but you need to re-interview.

Waymo’s a different company so your manager will probably be less helpful than if you move to another team within Google.

    • This could be a blessing in disguise if your manager blocks you from leaving :P

If you are on the team for more than one year your manager can't block you from leaving. You can literally give them the finger and leave.

    • Procedurally you’re right. But other teams sometimes know your team and have a relationship so they do informal checks.

Also, if your manager really doesn’t want you to move they can spread news and proactively reach out to the new team and plant a seed.

Not officially block, but block it in the background.

  • 18 month rule. After that go through interviews and a lengthy process. Your RSUs need to be revaluated as well since Waymo has its own equity structure. Bottom line, it's possible but far from easy

Just curious, why didn’t you directly interview for Waymo instead of (or along with) Google in the first place. The interview processes are totally different. I know folks from Apple who are at Waymo now and the interview is more focused on domain skills (perception, computer vision, deep learning, motion planning, robotics, etc) along with typical software/coding interviews. Getting an offer from Google doesn’t guarantee an offer from Waymo and vice-versa.

My resume got rejected because I don’t have domain specific experience. I was hoping to transferring to Waymo internally is an easier option

Depends on your level waymo can be pretty picky since they get a lot of internal and external s applicants there is no guarantee you would make it

I figured it would be pretty competitive:( can you tell the process to initiatw the transfer?

The only advantages you'll have are being able to search internal job openings and talk to the hiring manager directly but they have their own hiring process as they use a totally different stack. Remember that Waymo is part of Alphabet, not Google.

Not sure about specifics at Google but there's usually a minimum time in seat before you can move
