Google: worst experience ever in my life

Passed HC committee for L4.

Now I have team matching phase.

Recently, one of the team invited me for another round of onsite interview (which already very strange). After one hour conversation, manager told me that I am not good engineer (literally) at all, no match for his team. Some people from that team were arrogant during interview.

Wtf, Google?

After such case, i lost my motivation to join Google at all :(.

Tell me about difference of some programming languages. After I compared several languages, manager told that this is not impressive because everybody can read it on wikipedia.

There were a couple of data structure questions, which i answered very well. One of the team member put a comment: “it sounds i asked very easy question”.

OP, tell your recruiter. I don’t think they would be happy to hear that this is how Google was represented to a potential hire. Sorry that happened.

Google is not dying and will never die. In fact, they rule the world in many ways. That said, I would never opt in to the drama of a Google interview.

@monomo, all companies die eventually. The average lifespan of the modern western company is less than 20 years. Google will also be disrupted or outpaced or replaced.

Team match is not equal to interview. Team match is a serious activity from Google perspective- I can understand your excitement and inclination to see Team match as a waste of time. Team managers can reject you .

However , if the manager did tell you “you are not a good engineer” , it is really sad and not a representative of average Googlers reaction. Sorry for his behaviour . My suggestion would to discard such a feedback and wait for another team match option. In long run, this incident would not matter at all.

I believe, team matching is good thing. But it should not be so humiliating. It is fine to be rejected, but it is not good to give such feedback and behave so arrogant.

You should seriously report it with your recruiter, that's not acceptable. I also don't understand why would they ask knowledge questions if you aren't an specialist :/

We wouldn’t have given you an offer if you were a bad engineer. Ask your recruiter what the “team matching” process is like here, I’m a fan.
      Dec 12, 2018
  • How did you respond when he said that you were not a good engineer?
You could have told " hey at least I have basic decency unlike you". And turned to his Team member and said "I feel bad for you"and probably ended the conversation.
It's a blessing in disguise OP. Probably arrogant aholes like him are consumed by power and will berate their team members daily everytime he couldn't get it up when trying to rub one out quick and make them feel like shit. You need to leave a review about this in Glassdoor and convey this to the recruiter and turn down the offer

If you passed HC, you are as good as any L4 at his team. You are a good engineer, fuck that arrogant guy. Wait for a team match, there are plenty, and let your recruiter know about this after it.

Maybe he was trying to discourage you from picking his team by being rude. Not acceptable either way. Definitely not representative of Google, so suggest you to ignore that and choose a team that you like. That said, not every team is made equal and there are teams where you find the brightest of the minds and an average googler won’t be a good fit even

This managers seems arrogant and incompetent , you dodged a bullet OP . I suggest this strongly escalate to HR and your recruiter and leave a review on Glassdoor and decline the offer

I had a woman in VMWare give me a similar experience , the lady was 10 mins late and was arrogant and condescending , felt like a blessing ...this was for a distributed systems role and you dodged a bullet OP

You should have urinated all over his desk to establish yourself as the alpha male.

I interviewed at Google a few years back and went all way through the hiring committee. I called and backed out of the process. Partially because my current gig gave me a move into something I really wanted (and I didn't have to walk away from RSUs) but primarily I was really turned off by Google when I came to visit.

Now, this is super generalizing, but the team I met with seemed OK, I would be the senior person of the group I think but they all seemed good and not like slackers. The manager was definitely solid.

But everyone else I encountered there walking around or during several days of interviews totally turned me off. Most of the people I encountered seemed like super fresh grads. Nobody was ever on time and everyone seemed totally disorganized. I kept wondering "where are the adults here?"

I'm sure there are lots of good groups around there but I just couldn't get over the un-professionalism that seemed rampant everywhere in all my visits. I definitely didn't see anyone that seemed polished.

Don't worry, and first of all, why would you care? This is drama and it makes people fail interviews for the stupidest reasons. Report this behavior to the hr. Who the fuck is that motherfucker to say you're not good, on your face!?
I doubt Google will care but you can do what you can.

This drama is exactly why I tend to avoid Google at all costs.

OP was not interviewed fairly , let alone the feedback. He answered the questions . If manager wants to fail him , ask questions that the manager believes are true engineering questions.
