My current joining date at Google is in Jan but I'm thinking of postponing it to March-end to do some globetrotting. I'll also get stocks vested at my current company. How does joining date affect year end bonus grant at G? I heard that if you're there for the majority of the year and have a great rating only then you would be considered for refreshers (this is applicable only for the first year after joining).
Did you have the option to start in December? Starting in January is known to be the worst month to start with Google if you’re primary goal is to ensure you get the full stock refresh. Other people I know will go out of there way to ensure they start in Dec to not get screwed out of stocks. Unfortunately, we don’t prorate your time here for stock refreshers. You have to be with us for an entire calendar year to get the full standard amount.
Also, manager discretion can get you a little bit of stock but nothing compared to the standard. Also, they changed it to where you can be eligible if you exceed expectations on your first cycle but that’s rare.
If you're starting in Jan, might as well start in Dec. What HnC mentioned is right
No, because if you start in January you won’t get your year end equity refresh until 2021. It’s your first complete calendar year. That’s why I’m upending my life to start on 12/16, was hoping to do some travel and shit. Edit: changed “bonus” to “equity refresh” for clarity.
Oh I see. That sucks but gives me more incentive to stay until March and not to leave money on the table.
Internal policy changes constantly and technically it is possible starting this year to get a refresh if your initial ratings are good. But that's a very performance/manager/situation driven event that I barely know any details about. Potentially something to consider though. Also can confirm that bonus is prorated
