I see extremely high compensation for companies here. Is there any gotchas? Are people working harder or is there higher chance of getting fired for small mistakes? Can someone who has taken a big salary bump from mediocre/lower salary explain? I have 2.8yoe with 85k salary at a Boston startup
it is the opposite. better paying companies also treat you better. more tolerance & flexibility & respect.
Oddly, I’ve found this to be true as well
Maybe the willingness to compensate well shows a general positive demeanor and value towards your employees? In my shitty world when you tell your co-workers what the TC and perks are like in tech one of three things is claimed: 1) Better job security- maybe true but only slightly 2) they have to work more hours 60+. From what I've read this is not true and in fact a lot of my co-workers put in 50+ already because they convince themselves they're needed. 3) Higher COL- true but if you're willing to rent the TC bump greatly outweighs this. I will say that it's pretty hard to get fired even if you're a low performer here, so I guess that's a plus if you're lazy AF.
I'm definitely working harder at my TC than I was as an IC SWE. But I'm also working on stuff I really want to be and leading a team of smart people.
Moving from Microsoft to FB 1. higher expectation for self-driving even at junior levels, 2. much harder to coast - non-performance quickly leads to separation, 3. higher quality of people. If you take 10 people teams at MS/FB - top people will be comparable, the worst 2 people in the team at FB is likely to be comparable to average people at MS team. Two weakest people at 10 person team at MS if they were at FB, would be gone in <6 months. 4. FB has a very high tolerance for honest mistakes - you def not going to get fired for them. (Leaking/misusing data are obviously not honest mistakes) 5. If you are above average at FB, your life is amazing and def better than at MS. Faster promos, bonuses, more rrsponsibility faster, fairer performance process, less politics, faster feedback cycle. You will professionally grow at 2x MS rate - especially at the start of career. 6. If you are at the bottom, your life at FB is stressful. Many try to compensate low perf with long hours but it’s questionable if it will work long term. Most negative reviews of FB work culture are from this bucket. 7. Avg output/deliverables of the team at FB is much higher than output of comparably sized team at MS. Probably more than 2x more.
I hear fb has a weird "let's just get this out" mentality which leads to bad practices and learning incorrect things. Fact or myth?
It's called fail fast
One downside is you cannot walk away easily.... so you need to put up with whatever work and people you end up with . Working on web infra of companies which already have frameworks for everything is not the most interesting work possible. I would rather work on something radically new in a startup , but now the risk/reward ratio makes no sense.
Why can you walk away easily? Because of higher comp?
What do you mean by now the risk/reward ratio makes no sense?
Most of these high paying jobs are in Bay Area where cost of living is insane. If you want affordable homes then you need to sacrifice on commute
You don’t need to know all the hard leetcode problems. Just easy and medium is good enough most times.
2.8 yoe 😂
What's funny about my yoe? I do know that my salary is funny though.
Haha, Is think most people will just say "almost 3 years"
Comp is high because that’s what it takes to hire and retain. Treating you poorly and firing quickly wouldn’t make sense.
Mo money, mo problems 💰
