H1b extension rejections for FAANG Senior software engineers(8+ yoe )

Has anyone recently had H1b extension rejections for Senior SDE(8+ yoe) positions in FANG Companies . What was the reason?

I recently heard about an Amazon L6 SDE with 10+ yoe, whose visa extension was rejected with out RFE. He was in USA for 8+ years and his GC was in processing. He was from non-computer science engineering(India).

I’m little worried now because my visa extension is next year. I’m in a similar situation. 10+ years in USA and Senior SDE. Mechanical engineering background.

Want to know ( based on others experience) with the new rules, is extension denial a certainty for non-computer science BTechs. Want to start planning early, maybe Canada.

Is it possible to come back later on an L1 visa if my extension gets rejected.

Has anyone with similar situations tried H1b through different company later and had success. I mean is it the case of some immigration officers trying to fill the rejections quota.

Is companies still processing the GC after rejections?

Why are H-1Bs the only non-CS grads able to get CS jobs? An American with an engineering degree other than EE wouldn’t even think about applying for a CS job.

I think this is a good thing that H-1Bs without relevant degrees are getting rejected. Maybe companies will now be forced to hire locals and train them.

BTW in the first dot-com boom about 50% of web work was done by liberal arts majors.

@RudyTorren, talk about working cheap. Chances are, Boeing is paying you 50 percent less than what Amazon is paying H1B.

I know complainers will always crib and make up conspiracy theories to feel better themselves

Just to put things in perspective
      - I had 6 years of experience when my H1 was approved. I worked hard in IT industry to get relevant experience
      - my amazon interview panel was all white US citizens who thought I bring good relevant experience and is better than 50% of people working in same level

I know that the US government don’t owe me anything. But I still can lawfully choose where I want to stay and raise my family.
Im okay moving to a new place where my skills will be valued, if that move is required. I’m just trying to make an informed decision. Im confident about my skills I have built over time.
Please take a break and troll other posts

And regarding cheap labor conspiracy, all these FAANG companies have Indian development centers. So think what a company would do if they have to really cut cost.
By the way I heard Boeing is hiring a lot in India. 😀
May be they are cutting costs!

Re Indian dev centers: I remember how in the early 2000s there was anticipation that most s/w jobs will move from USA to India. That did not happen, at least for tier 1/2 companies. I dunno why but I have anecdotal evidence from a project at Microsoft where we tried to outsource something to a remote team in India. It was a shitshow, primarily because of very low-skill labor and managers always trying to cut corners and do the bare minimum possible.

There seems to be a big cultural difference between Indians who come to US and assimilate here (even if not fully) and those who have not yet. Don’t hold your breath for India taking over s/w industry if H1B is severely curtailed. I’m not sure highly skilled Indians from US will enjoy it over there (in professional sense).

jr6dp@ - I didn’t claim India is going to take over software jobs in tier 1 companies. I was bringing up actual facts where tier 1 companies find it difficult to attract enough talent with required skills. If government makes it more difficult, then its market dynamics- companies will open positions abroad to hire more people. Most tier 1 companies would prefer to keep their trained and experienced employees at least in a different country rather than loosing them.

I believe it’s a loose-loose situation for both individuals and USA and slight win for Indian economy.

Regarding major cooperations expansions in India, I believe USA will be loosing more jobs than it gains by restricting visas.

What happened to your case? I am an SDE-6 and have Electricals background. Got RFE. Should I prepare myself to move out of US?

People with no background in computer science are being rejected. I heard similar things in visa stamping.

Specialty occupation, ee degree is unrelated was the reasons. As per lawyers this is bullshit since EE is one of the recommended degrees for the job code :| ... Yes was before September

Wondering how CS graduate would have learned cloud and other current programming languages which didn’t exist back then however they are part of your visa application. This is simply absurd to treat just the college education as deciding factor for your application decision.

  • Sometimes I don't get the worth of desis moving to USA. Consistelyly living in fear all the time of being asked to leave , and worse, you have lost everything back home and need to restart. Sometimes you are too overqualified and costly for Indian companies to hire. Often derided by locales and never really accepted or absorbed.

It's time to start applying country quota to H1B as well. That way thousands of Indians won't be able to come here, and then always keep complaining about extension/GC etc.

Leveling up is kinda tricky and dangerous for Visa extensions!.

Is the rejection specific to non-CS stream? Or is it because attorneys screwed up the paperwork?

Any ece degree working in cs got rejected for h1b?
    Nov 4, 2018 0
  • PayPal wknu08
Yes they are rejecting a lot of H1B extension.
Seems the main cause is the change of position and /or type of work. Make sure you maintain whatever was approved for you last time. Also, they are definitely digging up your education qualification too. If your education is irrelevant to what you are working at, the chances of rejection are higher.

Yes, there is an option to apply through different company and getting approved. There are success cases, but it complicated and not a sure shot.

Yes you can come back on L1, depending on which company you are going back to and your history with it. Else if it's a new company you will have to wait for 1 year before they could apply.
