Has anyone been in those super pricey tech conferences

For example tech conferences like strata or amazon re:Invent all sell their ticket prices easily to 2000+. I am generally quite interested in blockchain technology and want to learn more about what is the the current most up to date achievement and there is a blockchain conference for which I find their talks β€œlooks” interesting but they also ask for 500+ dollars for admission. Same for other conferences cools stuff I want to catch up like data. Any solid looking conferences ask for super high priced admission tickets. There are some local free ones that I have been to but usually I don’t find them very informational. Just a lot of local startups trying to sell their idea/products. Curious whether I should try at least one of the non-free conferences.

Why are these tech conferences so expensive? Can somebody been to these conferences share thought whether they really worth such big money? Do you really see them helpful/informational?

  • They're expensive because a lot of companies will pay for their employees to go to them. Which sucks if you don't work for one of those companies and want to go, but c'est la vie

Re: attending a conference outside of your domain... you can sometimes come up with a good reason to attend for your team such as talking to customers or bringing a new approach back. See if there are PMs, CSEs, marketers or UX people who’d want to partner with you to go there for customer connections e.g. bring a survey or sponsor a table

Facebook and F8: the same policy as Google. You have to work on F8 to attend - man the booth, give a talk, talk to clients, etc.

I think most conferences and Meetups are a waste of time from an educational perspective, but incredible for networking opportunities. You'll meet tons of engineers and recruiters and important people, but most of the workshops and presentations is very high level coverage of concepts that you can easily Google on your own, and these talks consist of some Joe Shmoe reading from a set of PowerPoint slides. To be honest if your company isn't hooking you up with free tickets, it's not worth going.

You're better off watching the keynotes online as they're posted later usually.

No one personally pays for those, and they're definitely not worth it.

Fun as hell on company money though

Just got back from Google I/O a couple of weeks ago. Not bad conf but fully paid for via company.

I wouldn't pay for it out of my own pocket however. You can get the same knowledge watching the sessions afterwards.

What if the conference will not be publicly posted. Will you attend it?

Assuming you mean out of my own pocket? It would have to have really clear value. Cost of the conference, air fare, hotel, food, etc.

I know a lot of people pay for those 500+ conferences out of their own pocket. 500 out of your 100k paycheck is really a small number.

I know a few contractors too that pay for those 2000+ tickets out of their own pocket. Except it’s business expense in these cases.

What I found is that usually the 500+ conference is single track and 2000+ conference has multiple tracks.

500+ ticket plus travel can add up to $2000 too. So if your $2000 conference is local, it may still worth to go.
