I'm curious to learn if what people think in their heads and hearts are changing or if we're approaching it like any other business objective: my boss has told me XYZ is an important initiative so if you want to keep working here you'll get on board. It's blind so my expectations are low, but hoping for a serious discussion.
So you're saying hiring non whites is a bad thing?
Who said that?
I am an Indian, and diversity initiatives made me less interested in doing work because of too much propaganda and activism. Yes, diversity is good but it destroys the talent pool and growth because of bias for "special" people. I actually think if diversity is removed, Indians will conquer all the firms (in tech).
You just made the point for D&I with your last sentence. If you are a hiring manager or interviewer, you are biased to thinking Indian developers are superior and will pass on black or Chinese applicants.
I agree with you. I don't deny bias.
The important difference between Equality of output v/s input has become clearer to me. I think D&I should be pushed more at facilities/avenues that help develop individuals such as schools, colleges and internships. This may include giving financial aid to the people who need it and helping them get in. At workplaces, where individuals need to provide some output, the only thing that should matter is actual merit.
Companies are often blind to their unfair practices. I do a simple test to see if something is racist or sexist. Replace one group with another to see if it would be offensive. Ex. “We should be interviewing more people of color. To do this, we should recruit more from historically black colleges.” “We should be interviewing more white people. To do this, we should recruit more from colleges predominantly white.” Diversity initiatives shouldn’t seem racist or sexist if we swap the groups.
This.
One statement attempts to add to the income inequality gap between minorities and whites in this country purposefully. The other recommends you give others, who don't have ton of alumni and family connections already, a chance too. It's not like it's binary. Either we recruit from white colleges or black ones. It's more like let's try to recruit more from black colleges (maybe make it 5% of the colleges they recruit from) because if we don't try we'll never hire them, we'll continue only hiring in our circles, who will become rich and donate to our schools, who in turn uses that money and alumni network to make sure they produce better students and get them hired, and the cycle continues. So many people complain about immigrants/minorities taking up welfare and other resources since they are poorer then average but then get pissed when someone suggests they could be contributing far more to society if we stopped only hiring our friends or people very much like us. It's also ironic that only in diversity related conversations is it ok to pretend our leetcode interviews are completely fair.
HR found.
It’s changed my thinking, but not in the way they’d like. I refuse the join a religion that calls me me the aggressor by simply existing.
Being a white male is their version of Original Sin but there's no forgiveness. Ever.
yes I am less interested in diversity now
Yes, it changed my thinking. I thought that ranks at top tier companies are based on merits and abilities, while in reality discrimination there is at every level. Even if diversity candidates get hired they will have a harsh time proving themselves at work.
Or be promoted over equally qualified (or even better qualified!) candidates only because of secret quotas
I'm sick of all the diversity shit now!
You should also add another point that it has impacted negativity.
