I have 3 offers (I work in machine learning algo design as a principal DS in a startup, 7 years exp + PhD) Amazon L5 - 300k TC (they're low balling - should ideally give L6, they came up with a story that they need external L6 hire to be better than 50% of all L6 in amazon) Intuit staff data scientist - 303k TC + 25k joining bonus (they will increase later to 340-345k TC for the first year) Akamai principal data scientist - $350k TC I don't have a good brand name in my resume, so I need brand name but Amazon is low balling on the position. Also, don't want to work crazy 70-80 hours a week. YOE - 7 years Current - 200k TC + stock options
Get amazon to match, then go there. The challenges at Amazon are way more interesting
Amazon won't match. It's their best offer because they aren't offering L6.
Why did you not consider other "brand name" like G, Netflix msft, fb, Apple?
Got rejects at FB after acing their interviews. Netflix and apple didn't have relevant position for me. Msft in Bay area isn't hiring much right now (year end). Have Google onsite next week.
"Got rejected after acing their interview" perhaps they didn't like your personality ?! 😄
I’ll say take Akamai and try FAANG in another 6 months if you are not happy.
Thanks.. is akamai principal DS and Intuit staff comparable? Intuit's staff is at Google's L5-L6 as per levels.fyi. Akamai has no such comparison available.
Since you are thinking about moving soon anyway, title and money matters more. I doubt the industry see Intuit and Akamai differently when it comes to the prestige.
Is Amazon a good brand on resume ? I thought Amazon doesn't count under good brands
As additional info, 7 YOE is respectable, but is multiple years below what Amazon brings in as L6, typically. Also, most companies don’t reject you after you ace their interviews. I don’t know which you should join, but I do think you should avoid joining Amazon. I’ve been around for a while, and your over confidence/lack of humility will get you in to trouble here. Call me a troll if you like, or take the friendly advice, or both. If you do decide on Amazon, check the ego at the door and you’ll have a brighter future ahead. Good luck!
OP, I think the last paragraph in your original post already helped you ruled out Amazon: they don't appreciate you at the level you want, and you don't want the work hours they need.
Yeah. It's mainly between Intuit and akamai. Amazon is not even worth considering at the level L5. Even my juniors are at L6 in Seattle and other areas. The problems will be great there but it makes no sense to downgrade the level to do quality work.
Does L4 mean sde2 ?
L5 is SDE2
Intuit!
Don’t count on any future promised compensation from intuit 😅
"to be better than 50% of all L6 in amazon" That's not a story. The candidate is supposed to raise the bar for a job family. The interviewers didn't find you to be qualified for L6 based on your interview performance and background Side note: if you have work in DS then you should know that the tiny sample of people who complain about WLB at Amazon does not represent the majority of the company. I haven't met anyone in my few months here who works more than 40 hours a week
I had a L5 offer last year and decided to pass. I asked for a L6 loop this time and was rejected after a tech screen because ' didn't raise the bar'. Got this info from a recruiter. How does somebody asses raising the bar in a 45 min interview.. Sheesh
There is a bar raiser during interview that will assess whether you will raise the bar.
