Didn’t get fb manager role. Have an offer for senior mgr/fast track to director in chicago for consulting company. Another potential role is as principal sc at a tech company, that went ipo. They were vendors at my last role and want me. Which role : sc or senior mgr at consulting will make it easier for me to interview at tech companies and relocate to the Bay Area?

Doing what? What will you do in these roles? What tech if any will you work on? Some more details would useful. Also what consulting company? Some lead to great opportunities and work to get folks in senior positions Accenture, pwc) some will mean nothing other then a job
Without knowing enough details the tech + startup experience seems like it'd open more avenues for you rather than consulting in Chicago (esp since you're looking at tech roles). That said if you're OK with non tech ladder roles and the consultancy is good then that might be a better bet.
It’s a large consulting company and helping expand their analytics practice. I do want to work in tech, but had set a time limit on accepting a new job. Cannot stand my current job and don’t want to keep betting on a tech offer in nov/dec as the interview cycle slows. My thought process was: start new consulting practice and continue interviewing for tech roles remotely. I have a few interviews lined up and meanwhile practice so I don’t fail another google or Facebook interview in last round.
The strategy overall makes sense. Good luck!
Consulting in general is not highly respected in tech except few roles and companies. Without having atleast few recent years of tech experience on your resume, you will find it hard to land up in a senior role in tech In tech, strategy is “product” - essentially driven by seasoned product managers. Tech companies get investment bankers for raising money or doing Business development Pure strategy consultants are needed in huge tech companies like google, fb but outside these big ones you won’t find strategy roles. Even in these companies true vision of product and direction of company is led by seasoned product mangers. Scope of strategy managers are kinda limited to business development and is in support of product. However, if you get general manager role in amazon or Microsoft - that would be great as they have p&l responsibility and drive vision of division/ team There is a perception in tech that strategy consulting is all about giving suggestions but consultants can’t “do” shit. You would have to prove that you are great in execution and can get respect of engineering teams As a rule of thumb -Clarify your role, career ladder and scope of the team before you take up roles in tech
Good feedback. It is not a pure strategy role. It is leading tech assignments and people management and p/l responsibility. essentially execution focused and managing engineering team. Thank you for the feedback. All the responses here are making me want to step away from the ic role, unless it’s an amazing opportunity. I have a couple opportunities ic/product at amazon and looker I’m looking at. Appreciate the time for a thoughtful response.
If you get product opportunity at Amazon that would be great for you. Amazon likes people with consulting background and you can lead teams driving significant impact. IC roles are not necessarily bad. Keep in mind even principal product manager roles are IC roles. Unlike consulting , in tech the team manager roles come much later in career. You may have to grapple with this lack of team management / leadership opportunity - I faced the same challenge Having said that if you get true “manager” role over IC role, then take it. Getting manager role after joining in IC role is not easy
Ultimately, I would say the key statement here is that you can’t stand your current job. If moving to Chicago is acceptable to you and you can do so easily, then do it. Worse thing anyone should do is remain in a job you hate. You won’t excel and you will not get promoted.
If it's the company I work at...dont take it. Chicago consulting companies suck.
Do you want to be a people manager or an IC? Did you get any feedback about why you were passed up for a manager role at FB? Do you have any leadership experience? Typically, it is easier to move from a management role to another management role than it is to move from an IC role to a management role—especially true if you don’t have any people management experience.
I have people management experience and team leadership experience before. No I didn’t get any feedback from Fb. They rushed me on interview.3 freaking days!!! Wish I’d pushed the hell back and opted not to interview instead. That is good reminder of the ic and mgr back and forth. Thanks!!
