1. You do NOT need to know Chinese, we especially welcome people with diverse background.
2. This position is in Bellevue, WA.
3. We currently only have hands-on software engineer position, aka. programmer.
4. We sponsor H1b transfer and green card.
5. We are hiring for the foreseeable future so please drop me a line whenever you are ready

Please reach out to me if you want to know more about it.

Please ask your interviewers not to be focused on the way they have memorized an answer for their question. It is annoying as fuck when you can't even explore an idea

And for fucks sake do not ask bit manipulation nonsense

I feel you are wasting everyone's time and trying to show the government that you are trying to hire non Chinese folk

I'm sure OP got his share of condescending talk from everyone here. They should've told him hiring on blind is officially considered a high risk job.

Yeah.... There's no money they can pay to make good (independently thinking, with a strong sense of ownership) engineers be someone's bitches and that is almost certain if the culture will be as closed to non Chinese as i experienced it at msft

Why bother to discuss about English/non-English. Doesn’t the fact they only hire SDEs but no managers tell the whole story? They are just looking for Code monkeys to replicate AWS or Azure. All leadership roles are sent from HQ or some Chinese they can trust.

When companies hire coders, they are hiring code monkeys. When companies hire PMs, they are hiring idiots. Hmmm... I like that logic.

The HR are the first-class citizen in Alibaba. They fire people based on their moods. That’s scary. It’s interesting that the behavioral interview is actually between you and the HR and you must fit in the Chinese HR’s culture, which is impossible for non-Chinese engineers.
      Dec 19, 2017
  • Facebook BoredBroed
Non mandarin speaking people, if you want to grow to senior level and not just stay at code monkey level, don’t go to mandarin heavy shops. As a leader you would need to develop trust with HQ otherwise you won’t get projects or some mandarin speaker will claim credit (unintended but...). Ability to speak same language is very important in gaining trust as well as fitting into culture.

People that communicate with HQ and the site leads. I don’t doubt your good intentions in recruiting English only speakers unless the HQ takes it as a priority nothing would change. English only speakers suffer.

@yegf65 Ooo that would be sweet to learn Chinese at the same time. Took a year in high school, tough language. But if you're in an environment flooded with it and spoke it only, I bet it would take maybe a year tops to be fluent enough to get ideas across.

Probably a far fetched theory, Alibaba is trying to poach technology and/or people from AWS and Azure and make a Chinese version of the Cloud? Otherwise why pay such a high salary and why open in Seattle, why not in the bay area?
