We see the high earners who are pulling 500k plus here in blind all the time? Lets share your tips for other on how you did? Was it jumping ship or changing path or specialization whatever it is? So that it can help other pave the path. Base : 195k , Bonus : 10% , Stock: 0 Atlanta 6 yrs exp.
Yeah. Early stage companies tend to pay great and the stock options. Just off dividends from previous startups and my salary I do over $500k
“Stock 0” There’s your answer. You seriously needed to ask this?
Well I am in Atlanta and if you plug in cost of living calculators, 200k in Atlanta translates to about 350k SFO according to NerdWallet at least. So I think I am okey but My question was I do you jump from 350k to 500k.
You multiply your TC with RSUs. Safe bet is FANG or other established co, but higher opportunity for reward from a newcomer whose stock could grow exponentially over the next few years if you’re lucky.
Left every 2 years. Increased by 100k each time.

If you are talking household wealth, marry someone who makes good money.
Almost every millennial resume I see has job tenure of around 2 years in each role. Aside from not helping build wealth, it raises a flag that the candidate may not have spent enough time to have experienced and solved real challenges, or seen major projects through. There can be upsides to job hopping, but 6 years and three companies (or in some cases more) is less likely to help build wealth, and sends a certain message (which may be received with some bias, I’m not justifying it) by hiring managers.
Spoken like a true MSFT lifer.
Always prioritized opportunity over TC (or promotions). TC increased as a side effect.
Opportunity in terms of projects, leadership roles, what?
Building a product ground up, scaling up a product. In rare cases it also means working on a struggling (engineering wise) product that has a lot of potential.
Stock, stock, stock!
work your ass off and get promoted to principal. then you don’t care about which company it is or stock appreciation (they do make a huge difference though) . You will get that money.
I don’t think there is guaranteed way to get 500k other way. Hopping jobs to find luck and stock is a good strategy
Focus on growth companies. Stock for these companies rises much faster which constitutes a majority of the compensation.
I can relate to this comment. For the first time I am going to own significant stocks. MS’s. How would you recommend rest and vest plan? Sell them as soon as they vest? Vs collate them all together until one plans to leave? Vs sell some, make profit (gamble on timing the market that is) and repeat.
