Hiring an attorney to talk to HR

It was suggested to “hire an attorney to talk to HR” in one of the threads here on Blind. This is something I’ve never thought of as for some reason I was under impression that while working for a company you can’t involve third parties in your relationships with your manager or HR. What do you folks think? I’m an expert in my area, but not in conversations about my rights with people who do it every day (e.g. HR). So having a legal rep. on my side would be handy. Is that allowed?

If you are represented by an attorney, the company will have their attorneys get involved.

I'm not an expert. A lawyer might work with you behind the scenes and help you craft your communication to HR.

Yes, and once both side’s attorneys are involved it’s hard to imagine a positive outcome. Company may not want you to work until case is resolved.

You can get legal advice quietly without having them represent you during talks

I’m positive it cannot be disallowed. Notice, however, that your interests will not be fully aligned with the lawyer’s. They probably would not mind escalating the situation in hopes of bigger pay for themselves. Also, from your company’s perspective, once you’ve lawyered up, risks increase substantially. All companies are different, but many can opt to part ways with you, unless you’re irreplaceable or there’re more risks associated with that (e.g. you’re a pregnant minority female with disabilities). So, I’d go to a lawyer if things are really bad and you’re a goner most likely anyways.

You are not a slave. Do you ask permission to your manager when going to restroom ?
