Holiday Time Off

During the holidays how comfortable do you feel asking for time off with an Unlimited PTO policy?

Ooh. Good question! I also have unlimited. It would depend what I’ve done year to date. If you had a summer vacation and some other days off, I think it’s fine to extend your holiday days off or shut down by a couple of days, possibly the week after NEw years.

Pretty sure half of reddit is already gone until New Years

Same question - already approved for 2 weeks of PTO in March, should I take days off during the holiday season?

Yes. Yes you should

Most places don’t do any work between Christmas and New Years. Use the time to recharge. If you feel like you need to use the time well, maybe spend some of it studying something you wouldn’t normally have time for.

Totally comfortable. I usually take 6-8 weeks off per year with unlimited PTO. Honestly, it comes down to if you’re still delivering and owning your own time. This year I’ll be taking a week for thanksgiving and 2 weeks for Christmas.

Damn! Is that normal to take 6-8 weeks at Salesforce?

Salesforce kgdrgdsg Nov 24, 2018

This! People should use their PTO, no reason to give a company all of your life. Europe has like 25-30 days minimum (plus lots more holidays), you shouldn't feel bad to aim for something like that.

I’ve taken 5 weeks or so this year with another 10 days before the end of the year. As long as I got my on call covered and I do what I need to do, it’s fine.

At Box we have unlimited and lots of people take off for the holidays. I've been there > 2 years and I've never checked to see how much I've used. I recently heard a manager taking about someone requesting too much time off, but that manager is fairly new to Box. Other than that, I've never heard the phrase "too much vacation time". it's very acceptable to take 2-3 week chunks. Some people do more than that but then they would do some remote work for part of the time.

I have unlimited days off. My advice is to take what you feel you need in order to get quality time in with your family or recharge your batteries. Your boss can always say no. If your boss holds it against you they are petty and not well suited for leadership. Take that as a learning opportunity.

I have unlimited but the company also gives 2 weeks at Christmas.

Sadly, I don't have unlimited PTO, and can't use any at the holidays.
