I got an offer from Home Depot e-commerce group for Sr. Data Scientist while Pandora offered me a position for Research Scientist. They both offer almost the same TC so which one to choose?

Pandora culture is unparalleled. Bias of course but it really is different from other companies. People actually care about each other and about the product. Pandora’s making a huge investment in the now expanded Atlanta office so expect Atlanta to be HQ 2.0. If you work in tech then the Pandora name will likely do you a lot better than Home Depot. If you’re a scientist at Pandora you’ll be tinkering around with what makes Pandora special and what Pandora has always been doing (great recommendations and knowing what people like to listen to).

      Not everything is perfect here:

      Unable to make a decision.
      Rewarding the old-guard.
Laying off those who speak against the old-guard.
      Low compensation.
      Lack of innovation.

I’d go with Pandora. Retail is limited on bottom line growth.

If Pandora is still around..market is pretty saturated there. Home Depot isn't going anywhere anytime soon .

Pandora may be a good place to work, but you’re like 3rd or 4th in a crowded field. Stock price has gone down 60% over the last 5 years.

Home Depot is top of their field and stock more than doubled in the same time. E-Com is the next big step.

How does Home Depot pay at senior levels? What could L6 or L7 G or FB person get?

Scientist team at Pandora is phenomenal, and Atlanta office is growing in great ways.

Frankly, Pandora has a better tie to the Silicon Valley if you wanted to bounce towards there someday in your life time.

Pandora has a lot more interesting data and has a lot of the benefits of a "startup" (free snacks, free avocados, etc).

It's in a tough place right now, but even then you have a lot of opportunity as a vast majority of the old guard are slowly being removed or quitting cause their stocks ended up being bad.

As someone on the science team, you're surprisingly isolated from a lot of the drama and have the ability to dig through a decade plus of listener data.

Home Depot may have a decade of data, but they never really made it a core part of their business like Pandora did.

Of course, I'm biased cause I'm at Pandora, but I think you'd be able to use us as a good jumping mat at the very least.

Great post and opinion. Obviously being biased as I’m in the Analytics world of Home Depot, retail data is very interesting as well and Home Depot is investing in their tech and data science teams probably more than any other established retailer.

Being a market leader as opposed to a one-time leader now 4th-5th to the crown has lots of advantages as well, since we have some money to throw around. Our stock price is killing it right now and we’re a mainstay. Look at institutional investors putting money into us to show how stable we are.

Roles in same location? Personally I'd go with HD since their business model is fundamentally far stronger and enormous barriers to entry

Pandora still makes no money, big losses every year. Home Depot has a footprint, makes money, and is trying to revamp their online presence. I have a friend at HD whose quite happy.

I know Pandora has hired some people in Atlanta that previously worked at home depot. Maybe try to do a search on linkedin and reach out to those people for their thoughts

E-Com group has a lot power right now in Home Depot. Lots of investment and opportunity.

I don’t understand how either the technical challenges or market opportunity are remotely interesting for HD (particularly from a science POV) but different strokes. I will concede that they’re probably a more stable place than Pandora, although retail is kind of a shitshow right now outside Walmart/Amazon.

Home depot is not in remotely the same boat as traditional retail. It's far more indexed to construction industry, which is booming
      Jul 16, 2018
    • Pandora zOpL58
Right but a lot of industries are booming right now including Financial Services and HC—not sure how that means these are necessarily great places to join as a data scientist. But yeah if you’re just interested in maximizing RSU value, go for it.

  • Pandora zOpL58
Yeah I’d reiterate that the science team is completely insulated from any drama at Pandora. It seems great lol.

I think it depends at what point in your career you are. There are some good teams at the home depot, there are some not so good teams. THD isn't going anywhere soon though, so the stability is there.

From what other people are posting the work at Pandora would most likely be more interesting and look better on a resume.

If you're looking for a stepping stone, I'd say Pandora. If you're looking to have stability and climb the ranks (if you can manage the political corporate environment) THD would be better.

Why r u surprised? Is it low or high? This actually match the Atlanta market.

Pandora is not known to pay top dollar and I didn’t know 200-240k was “Atlanta market” for Senior Data Scientist. Senior at pandora is not so senior.

Definitely Home Depot. It’s a behemoth that’s putting a bunch of money into tech right now. Pandora’s not going to be around much longer with their shrinking market share.
