What’s the secret? Some of you MF’s are making enough to buy a house a year at 2-3 years in. 5 YOE 170k TC Los Angeles Worked at Adobe(not as prestigious, but still get calls from G) I can’t get a offer higher than 180k from Fb/Amz/Goo. Had offers at each.
Need competing offers Also easier to get crazy offers in the Bay Area, offers for LA are lower Alternatively take that lower offer at FB and get promoted fast, then let your refreshers catch you up
I think competing offers is the trick. You can essentially have multiple companies in a bidding war for you. Also, 170k for 5 YOE is still above industry average IMO. It’s tough seeing all this stuff on blind but we all are own our own path.
OP, are you a developer or what? Or a product designer?
I’m 8 years at 360k TC. GRIND hard in your roles and you’ll promote quickly. Become indispensable and go where the help is most needed. (Seattle)
What would you qualify as grinding? I get promotions, but they don’t seem to increase my value enough currently.
First the first part of my career, I was well known in my org for going to the red projects. Teams on the verge of failing and then helping rescue them. It was a lot of grinding. Long hours coding, working through customer issues but always returning the project back to green. This resulted in top performance reviews for several years in a row and quick promotions. For every new team I went to, I ALWAYS renegotiated my compensation and never had it not result in a good TC bump
If you haven’t already, I recommend reading “Ten Rules for Negotiating a Job Offer” by Haseeb Qureshi.
His articles on comp and negotiation are all A++ must read
Recruiters will tell you that going to a new company won't increase your comp by much, but from experience this is just not true. If you are a good employee, enjoying your team, enjoying your current place, you won't leave unless the TC is noticably higher at another place. If they want you, they'll have to pay a premium for poaching you over to them. My advice, do a good job at your current place and make yourself irreplaceable, simultaneously, interview on the side and get offers. Now you're in the position of power to not accept unless they can convince you with more comp. That being said, TC isn't the end all. If you're happy where you are, not overworked or underpaid, try enjoying life outside of work. When you are compensated more, you are naturally expected to produce more. You can come in at a high level with high comp, but underperform, which can be stressful. God forbid you get let go, and all of a sudden you are desperate for a job, and now you'll probably accept the first low-ball offer you get, putting your TC right back down.
Get in the door and earn that TC at one of those companies. Higher earning potential than at Adobe from what you're saying your experience has been
Pfft you think a 500k bay area com will get you a house in 2-3 yrs? Think again
Seattle, before it becomes Vancouver (but is still a real city with real talent and not nothing but a bubble)
Find a niche and excel. Security is in high demand everywhere and some prodsec and infosec engineer positions have excellent TC for seasoned vets and crazy career growth for this interested in becoming proficient and productive in the field.
Yeah what is the secret? Need more yoe?
Less years of yoe will lead to more TC based on current state of industry interviewing.
What do you mean?
