I was hired as L4 with MS degree and 5 years experience, although most experience was in a different field (materials physics/engineering).
I'll be promo'd to L5 in less than 1 year. Was just told I would have gotten this quarter if I had doc ready. L6 will take 3-4 more years probably.
But the RS job family has a lot of variation. In the case of my team, we're mostly building models and processes. A lot of data analysis and machine learning work. I also have some pure research projects with plans to publish, but that's more a "nice to have" instead of anything required or expected.
Is your team hiring for AS/RS? I have been meaning to transition into an AS/RS role. Don't have any publications though. MS with 6 years experience in software + ML/Simulation etc.

What do you mean "doc ready"?
