How do cats react to apartment hopping

considering getting a cat, I want to give my cat a good life and not traumatize it, but i’m not at a point in my life where i have multi-year stable housing - might hop rental to rental Has anyone had experiences with having a cat and moving apartment to apartment? Some people tell me cats hate this and you should never move with one; other people tell me cats don’t care about much besides food. if breed matters, considering a Ragdoll

No idea to your OP but I heard ragdolls are pretty hard to get because there is a long wait list.

Cats generally don't give a fuck.

Not true. I have a cat and I have moved twice in 6 years. Both times the cat was traumatized and didn’t start acting normal again for weeks.

Cats are absolutely traumatized by moves.

Get a goldfish. Cats are extremely territorial and independent. Trapping them in a box that you call your home and moving them around and around is a soul crushing experience.

Don't get a pet when you're not stable. They don't understand moves and will be stressed. When they are stressed they have a tendency to pee anywhere and everywhere outside their box. Be smart and wait until you have your situation stable and no figured out

I spent years reading about and studying cats. They’re absolutely traumatized by moves. They’re effectively wild animals who self-domesticated themselves. They’re extremely territorial and need ownership of their space, especially from other cats. Further, their lives are terrible if they don’t have a lot of space, including vertical space. Moving is such an unnatural thing for them. Don’t get me wrong. I love cats, but most people shouldn’t own them. They treat them as low-maintenance dogs which is terrible.

Cats will hide for one to three days after moving into a new place. But once they realize the new place is safe, they'll start to explore and soon become comfortable. It helps if you provide familiar objects, like the cat's food bowl, toys, and furniture (boxes, cat trees, etc.). Note that my experience is mostly with ex-feral American shorthairs. One of mine has moved 5 times, and will hide for 2-3 days after each move; the other has moved 8 or 9 times, including a cross-country flight, and hides for a few hours each time. She's sleeping next to me right now, as she does most nights; the more skittish one is on her cat tree, but often sleeps on the bed too.

Dogs are completely fine with this kind of thing, it’s like going on a field trip for them. But cats are territorial and they need to orient themselves to where they are. That’s why most of them are terrified in a car and when you move, you’re supposed to expose them to one room in your house at a time, because too much can really traumatize them. Moving constantly is not a healthy situation for a cat.

We moved multiple times, cats were stressed when the furniture was taken out from home and then hid under the furniture at a new place, but their stuff moves with them, it is a new apartment but the furniture and their belongings are all the same, it’s not like we sell everything and move to another state. Seriously, they are more traumatized by annual visits to a vet, since they hate the car and hate the clinic and hate the rectal temperature taking, and obviously the vaccination.

Cisco Avr1UsK May 25, 2018

Why would anyone hate the rectal thermometer ?
