    Pretty quick.

    2017 - learned to code (making like $11 / hr working part time at the bank)
    2018 - first job as developer (82k)
    2019 - L5 at Amazon (240k)

    All were company switches.

      If you were doing something else for the $$$ Amz, would you do anything else?

      Seems you're a genius at this

      @techman1 - yep! Coding bootcamp. Self taught for a bit before but just ground level basics.

      @sriv123 - SEA now

      @codezilla1 - thanks!

      @L A R R Y - thanks!

      @rQsc13 - sorry, I'm not sure I 100% understand the question. If you're asking if I would do any other type of job for the same amount of money, then maybe? But I cant imagine too many careers with the same upside (salary-wise) that allows for the same level of effort.

    Google L4->L5 in a year, L5->L6 about 4 years later. Initial bump on promo was small but continued good performance at the higher level led to significant raises after.

    TC 480K, I can't tell you exact TC numbers at each promo because even the most recent one was 4 years ago and I really only kept records of salary bumps, not stock and bonus.

      Loss of WLB not worth the extra comp, especially since I'm retiring in a couple years anyway.

      I know my own limits. I'd rather be solidly Exceeds at L6 than to try working my butt off for L7. And leading a significantly larger team never really appealed to me.

      I'm 38.

    TC when was hired at Google was ~130k. When I was leaving was ~900k, though was going to hit cliff as I got a 500k rsu grant over four years because of an Amazon principal offer in 2015.

      CMTS is Consulting Member of Technical Staff - equivalent to Google’s E6. Oracle pays extremely well for its top people. G/FB offered me M1 last year and 550k and 565k TC respectively. Didn’t seem worth it and hence continued at Oracle.

      At my last job, there was a team maintaining an arcane piece of software that was bulky and hard to maintain. Team of 25 engineers. I looked into it and found we weren't using 90% of maintained functionality in any meaningful way. Rewrote the entire system in a week in a modern programming language, 99% fewer lines of code. Needs 1 engineer to maintain, 20x more reliable.

      I know people stuck longer at 63 comparing to 62.
      64 is true senior... At 63 you might get down-leveled at Google or Amazon whereas 64s don’t usually get down-leveled.

      59-62 is relatively easy. Getting to 63 and beyond is not that easy and depends on several factors like ownership, knowledge etc.,
