How is Expedia remote culture/work life balance ?

I think Expedia is my dream company! Does the company culture encourage you to travel a lot / talk about traveling a lot? What percentage of your teams/workforce gets to work remotely? Are your offices in global locations and do you travel there? How is the Tech culture and how intense is some of the advance tech stack you use? Could you demystify and provide an unbiased opinion for someone evaluating career options and loves travel + tech + (food)?

Travel is not a part of the lifestyle there as a dev. You will never travel. The tech stack is modern, as developers will start using new things just because they're bored with the status quo. Generally decent coding and design practices are used. But the pay is extremely subpar for the industry. They'll pay you about 140k TC versus 200k TC at another tech company for the same rank. Work life balance is good, balanced against not paying you fair market value though. It's an environment that's designed to let slackers coast, and accumulate bad devs who aren't capable of getting their fair value. Their industry is static and they punish anyone not in the main Corp. They punish employees with nerfed bonuses if there's a hurricane or something they can blame financial difficulties on. They're not a growing industry, and their comp matches that reality. I would strongly advise not to join them

Everything that @Salesforce said. Most of the business focus is on minimizing revenue loss rather than growing the business. A lot of cost cutting in terms of staffing and remote work is not encouraged unless there's extraordinary circumstances. You do come across some really smart engineers that are passionate about the job and travel in general. Too early to predict but I feel a lot of the high performers in Seattle area are going to leave in the next year, career growth has also slowed down in addition to the whole Eastside/Seattle move drama.

As a high performer the last few years that is considering moving to Seattle from Bellevue, I’m actually hoping for some attrition. We have been bloating a bit and it’s time for us to get more intelligent about our investments.

The bloat is exactly why they won't bail out even after the move. They're not good enough for other companies, so they'll cling to their Expedia jobs at all cost. The great irony here is that Expedia is thinking they'll poach Amazon devs after moving to Seattle, except they pay like 60% of what Amazon does. Expedia already suffers from an inverted pyramid, where new hires are brought on for vastly more than the comp of existing experienced devs. They fail to promote or give raises within, and instead prefer to hire from outside. Their business model will continue to lose them good devs, while retaining the trash, until eventually Airbnb moves into the hotel space and Expedia collapses as an entity. It's like a bad joke from the management layer. Their CEO Dara knew this, which is why he bailed out to go to Uber. If the CEO doesn't even believe in the company, why should you?

I asked for a remote position and got denied. I wanted to take some time off for a few months, so company doesn't really have any supporting policy (also not that i was interested anymore) so i left Expedia
